Position Title: Director of Laboratory Services

Salary Range: $120K to $150k/year
Location: Angola, Indiana
Position Summary
The Director of Laboratory Services is responsible for supporting strategic planning, operational leadership, and overall management of laboratory services. This role supervises laboratory professionals, technicians, and support personnel engaged in diagnostic testing and patient care activities, functioning under the direction of or in collaboration with a Pathologist.
The Director drives operational excellence through performance analysis, process optimization, regulatory compliance, and team leadership. The position emphasizes quality assurance, efficiency improvement, data-driven decision-making, and cross-functional collaboration within a matrixed healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
Operational & Strategic Leadership
- Assist in planning, directing, and evaluating laboratory operations
- Develop and implement systems, workflows, and methodologies to improve efficiency and effectiveness
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives using KPIs and performance metrics
- Support organizational goals through data-driven operational decisions
Clinical & Technical Oversight
- Coordinate diagnostic activities in cooperation with Pathology
- Provide input into test methodologies, validation protocols, and technology adoption
- Participate in equipment selection, evaluation, and implementation
- Ensure appropriate staffing models to support clinical demand
Regulatory & Quality Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards (CLIA, CMS, and relevant regulatory/accreditation bodies)
- Maintain readiness for inspections and audits
- Oversee quality assurance, proficiency testing, and corrective action processes
- Enforce adherence to safety, infection control, and risk management protocols
Leadership & Staff Development
- Supervise and direct laboratory personnel, including the Laboratory Technical Supervisor
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and positive work environment
- Promote staff engagement, development, and performance management
- Model professional behavior and customer service excellence
Collaboration & Relationship Management
- Build and maintain internal and external professional networks
- Work across departments and interdisciplinary teams
- Encourage knowledge sharing and adoption of best practices
Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of clinical laboratory experience required
- Minimum 3 years of experience in microbiology and blood bank required
- Prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred

Education
Candidates must meet one of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of laboratory training/experience in high-complexity testing specialties; or
- Master’s degree and 2 years of laboratory training/experience in high-complexity testing specialties; or
- MD/DO/DPM or PhD and certification in clinical pathology or 1 year of laboratory training/experience in high-complexity testing specialties
Certifications
- Must meet CLIA ’88 requirements for laboratory supervision
- Certification as Medical Technologist (MT/MLS) or Diplomate of Laboratory Management by a recognized accrediting agency such as:
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
- American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- National Credentialing Agency (NCA)
- Or equivalent credentialing organization
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Accountable for all aspects of laboratory operations
- Direct supervision of laboratory staff, including the Laboratory Technical Supervisor
- Oversight of staffing, scheduling, performance management, and compliance adherence
Physical Demands
This position falls under Level 2 – Light Duty classification.
