Position Overview

POSITION SUMMARY
The lead custodian supports the Custodial Manager by providing lead responsibilities during assigned shifts. Like the Custodial Manager, the Lead Custodian is an essential role in maintaining the building and physical plant, and supporting a learning environment that promotes health, attitude and pride of students. In addition to regular building maintenance functions, the lead custodian provides direct support to staff in set up and maintenance of furniture and equipment. The lead custodian also serves as a role model for students by displaying a professional, courteous, and helpful nature. The lead custodian provides support and works closely with custodians during evening activities. This position reports to the Custodial Manager.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Lead Custodian receives overall direction from the Custodial Manager during the assigned shift. The lead custodian operates within ENMU policies and procedures, and by applying acceptable custodial standards, Labor and Industry standards, and OSHA standards. Reviews the master calendar to prepare for evening/weekend events to ensure adequate resources. Ensures continued operations during Custodial Managers Leave time.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, scrubs, and refinishes floors; clean, dust and polish furniture; wash windows and walls; clean restrooms; dispose of rubbish, change lights, etc.; make certain all areas of the building are kept in a clean, sanitary and orderly condition according to industry and/or district standards.
  • Pick up litter within the building entries.
  • Assures safety during inclement weather to including shoveling, salting, providing slip protection on wet floors, etc.
  • Applies cleaning chemicals according to established safety procedures.
  • Adheres to safety measures for cleaning, lifting, moving, and operating equipment.
  • Performs minor repair and maintenance as authorized by Physical Plant Foreman.
  • Coordinates with the Physical Plant Administration in initiating maintenance service requests.
  • Assists Custodial Manager in maintaining inventory and requesting cleaning supplies and materials needed to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Secures equipment and supplies and protects against pilferage, loss, theft, or abuse.
  • Periodically inspects, or otherwise maintains awareness of, facility and equipment to detect and prevent injuries or damage.
  • Maintain control of keys for the facility and distribute to staff as required.
  • Secures school building to ensure proper building security at all times. Lock, secure and code out building at end of shift.
  • May assist with implementing emergency planning and response.
  • Provides direction, feedback, and guidance that will enable custodial crews to perform their job requirements as directed by the Custodial Manager.
  • Advises Custodian manager and Physical Plant Foreman on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
  • Ability to communicate and maintain good working relations with all ENMU employees, vendors, contractors, and public entities.
  • Strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials and equipment.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to meet time constraints and deadlines.
  • Ability to work using ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts and campus vehicles.
  • Ability to communicate in person, by radio, electronically and over the phone.
  • Ability to use computer equipment to complete reports, maintain inventories, etc.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Hold a valid New Mexico driver's license with a safe driving record.
  • 3 years' experience as a custodian.
  • Must be able to operate power equipment and maintain lift certification.
  • Forklift, Title 9 and defensive driving certification or be willing to get forklift and driving certification at first scheduled training of each (at the expense of the employer).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bilingual.
  • Ability to operate power equipment and maintain lift certification.

Working Conditions



Work is performed during normal work hours, with some evenings and weekends to meet deadlines.
Work is sedentary in nature that at times requires exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles.
Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials or illnesses during the course of their duties.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, move about, communicate, hear and speak. Noise level may be high when operating power equipment.
Employee may be required to work in restricted spaces to include crawling and/or climbing as working at heights. Required to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift.

Paid Time Off

Faculty Paid Time Off
  • Medical leave is accrued 48 hours in the Fall and 48 hours in the Spring.
  • Personal Leave - Five personal work days each academic year and two work days during the summer. Only regular faculty will be eligible for personal leave. Personal leave will not accumulate from academic year to academic year.

Support Paid Time Off
  • During the first year of service, full time non-exempt (hourly) employees accrue 7 hours of annual leave and 7 hours of medical leave per month.
  • The second year of service, full time non-exempt employees accrue 10 hours of annual leave and 10 hours of medical leave per month.
  • The third and subsequent years of service, full time non-exempt employees accrue 14.66 hours of annual leave and 14 hours of medical leave per month.
  • Employees must work for the University for three months before they are eligible to use annual leave.
  • Leave accruals will be pro-rated for part time employees.

Professional/ At-will Paid Time Off
  • Full time exempt employees accrue 14.66 hours of annual leave and 14 hours of medical leave per month.

Employee Educational Assistance Plan

Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell offers a tuition waiver for permanent, full-time and part-time regular employees and retirees. Employees can take up to 9 credit hours on the Roswell campus. Their IRS dependents are not restricted in the number of credit hours they can take. For detailed information reference 40.9 Educational Assistance Program.

For classes offered by ENMU in Portales, the Portales campus will waive some tuition for either the employee or spouse, dependents, as defined by the I.R.S., are not eligible for tuition waivers for classes taken through the Portales campus.

Additional course fees will still need to be paid by the employee.
