General Overview Functional Area: Engineering (ENG) Career Stream: Test Engineering Development (TED) Role: Lead Engineer (LEN) Job Title: Lead Engineer, Test Development Job Code: LEN-ENG-TED Job Level: Level 08 Direct/Indirect Indicator: Indirect Summary The Lead Engineer in Test Development designs, develops and implements automatic test equipment and test programs for product testing and design verification that ensure robust and high‑quality assembled products in manufacturing. A Test Development Engineer may specialize in many areas but is generally categorized into Structural (verification of an assembly process by testing each of its smaller elements and their interconnects) and Functional (verification that a design will perform its main purpose). Incumbents are fully qualified to execute job/role accountabilities working independently on most aspects of the job. Work is performed within established professional standards and practices. Tasks are moderately complex in nature where judgment is required to complete recurring assignments independently and to determine the best methods to follow to complete assignments. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve results may have a negative impact on the division’s/department’s operations, schedules, and/or performance goals. Works under general supervision. Situations not covered by standard processes, procedures and methods are referred to manager or expert resource. May demonstrate work methods to new employees. Detailed Description Work independently to develop technical solutions without assistance in a limited number of technical fields supporting common segments/technologies. Reviews and interprets customer documentation, conducts research, analysis & experiments with minimal direction from senior staff. Attend and interact in technical discussions with customers. May also solve complex problems in cooperation with a team of other engineers. Project technical leadership, including management of (and communication with) team members, suppliers and customers both internal & external. Create technical proposals (solutions and timelines) based on requirements. Provide high level test hardware and software solution architecture. Review equipment data sheets and select appropriate equipment based on requirements. Create technical proposals with costed BOM and hours estimates. Create structural and functional test strategy and test plan to meet project goals based on product design requirements. Ability to research and comprehend relevant product technologies and skills associated with product technologies. Involvement in all areas of the manufacturing test development process, including hardware/equipment selection, procurement, test code development, hardware integration, system integration, validation, qualification and installation support for manufacturing onsite. Collaborate with customer product design teams, providing feedback from product testability, test coverage, diagnosability, reparability, firmware/diagnostics and user experience standpoint. Develop production level (low to high volume) manufacturing test strategies and test requirements based on product design hardware and software specifications for new products. Develop manufacturing test "Testplan" documentation. Design and develop test solutions including hardware & software elements. Develop new test code and tools for manufacturing test automation from scratch. Integrate new tools and other custom code developed by other internal groups or external customer teams. System integration, qualification, and installation to meet product, quality and test requirements outlined in the "Testplan" document. Debug of tester issues using design of experiments, tools, and failure analysis methodologies. Execute all validation/qualification requirements by applying statistical and common industry methods. Stabilization of Test Solutions for manufacturing to optimize with process teams focusing on failure analysis, cycle time & test yield optimizations, as well as false failure reductions. Maintaining test equipment, test fixtures and specialized tools for manufacturing test automation. Keep up to date with relevant industry knowledge and regulations. Apply a continuous improvement mindset to all aspects of the development process. Some travelling requirements to overseas (Mexico, Asia, EU). Knowledge/Skills/Competencies Engineering Foundation Competencies. Knowledge and understanding of the design process for systems and printed circuit boards. Knowledge and understanding of systems and printed circuit board manufacturing processes and equipment. Knowledge of industry and quality standards. Ability to evaluate, diagnose and troubleshoot problems. Knowledge of materials and components used in the construction of systems and printed circuit boards and subassemblies. Knowledge of industry and quality standards for incoming materials. Ability to evaluate materials, gather and analyze data and determine root cause of problems. Knowledge of testing software, processes and methodologies and failure analysis. Knowledge of IT platforms, networking, database design and programming languages appropriate to area. Minimum 2‑3 years of practical software development experience in Linux environment with minimum one language (Python mandatory). Minimum 2‑3 years of practical experience using GIT in Linux environment (mandatory). Minimum 2‑3 years of engineering development and manufacturing operations support (preferred). Javascript, HTML, XML, TCL, Bash Scripting, MS Visual Studio .NET (C#, VB, ASP), SQL (preferred). Strong operations background in electronics manufacturing experience (mandatory). Software design, development, debug and release. Some hardware development, integration and qualification (preferred). Project leadership and managing multiple projects with good organization skills. Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of internal and external customers. Instrumentation automation, driver development (preferred). Board design and layout experience would be an asset (preferred, not mandatory). Development in Hyperscale, Cloud Connectivity and/or DataCenter industry would be an asset (most preferred). Development in Aerospace & Defense and/or Healthcare industry would be an asset (not mandatory). Development experience with National Instruments LabView would be an asset (not mandatory). National Instruments TestStand experience would be an asset (not mandatory). Physical Demands Lab work including assembling test equipment, racks of instruments, running cables, wiring and pcb assembly. Normal office environment with exposure to manufacturing environments.
