The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an experienced Bridge Engineer 3 to serve as a Lead Structural Detailer in Tumwater, WA. This position produces bridge and structure plan sheets using computer aided drafting (CAD) software for incorporation into WSDOT construction contracts. The top candidate will draft clear and accurate structural plans and details to ensure that bridges and structure can be constructed in a cost-effective manner. This position requires superior production rates, full knowledge of office detailing practices, mastery of office CAD software, and the willingness to mentor less-experienced structural detailers, enabling them to effectively perform their job.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Lead Structural Detailer will:


  • Draft detailed structural plans for bridge and structure construction, rehabilitation, and planning.
  • Operate CAD software with a high degree of geometric accuracy (MicroStation Connect, MicroGDS) to create complete detailed plans for bridges, retaining walls, buried structures, and other structures.
  • Serve as a lead detailer for projects requiring multiple detailers.
  • Mentor new and current detailers and designers in the office CAD practices and applications.
  • Support the development of bridge and structural plan sets and construction quantity estimates.
  • Assist Supervisors in developing Structural Detailing staffing estimates for bridge projects.
  • Maintain organized file structures for CAD work, digitally signed plans, and supporting information.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Completion (or pending completion) of an associate (two-year) degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design or Drafting Technology OR five (5) years of work experience in the development and drafting of engineering drawings using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Structural Detailer at the Bridge Engineer 2 level (or equivalent) producing bridge and structural plans conforming to industry drafting standards.
  • Experience producing and checking structural drawings consistently and rapidly with MicroStation Connect or MicroGDS software.
  • Experience in managing multiple assignments in a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience in communicating effectively and coordinating plan development among multiple detailers.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Ability to interpret as-built plans of structures and to develop details based on these as-builts.
  • Understanding of roadway geometry including vertical and horizontal curves, and superelevation diagrams.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of reinforced concrete and steel structures.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of ProjectWise Explorer.
