Location: North Carolina, US Proposed start date: May 18, 2026 Position type: Full‑time permanent staff (EHRA non‑faculty) Position Summary The Learning Specialist provides intensive academic support to assigned student‑athletes across all sports. Responsibilities include providing one‑on‑one and small group instruction in study skills and learning strategies, developing academic programming and materials for student‑athletes struggling to meet academic standards, and assisting with individual learning and study plans. The specialist works closely with other Academic Support Program staff, collaborates with campus‑wide offices, and may be required to work evenings, weekends, and travel occasionally. Responsibilities Provide one‑on‑one and small group instruction in study skills and learning strategies. Develop and implement educational learning programs and activities for academically at‑risk student‑athletes. Assist student‑athletes in developing individual learning and study plans. Collaborate and communicate closely with learning specialists, academic counselors, and tutor coordinators. Assess academic readiness of prospective student‑athletes and serve as liaison to campus learning resources. Ensure compliance with NCAA, ACC, and university policies and procedures. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Post‑baccalaureate degree required (or foreign equivalent); alternatively, a relevant bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) and three or more years of relevant experience in tutoring, supplemental instruction, or program direction may be accepted. Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Knowledge of best practices in undergraduate student retention and familiarity with student‑athlete academic progress issues. Experience working with diverse student populations and academically at‑risk students. Nightly and weekend work required, all year round. Demonstrated effectiveness working collaboratively with staff and colleagues. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Master’s degree or post‑baccalaureate degree preferred. Minimum of two years of experience in special education, counseling, academic support programs, or a related field. Experience as a learning specialist working with student‑athletes in a college or university setting. Knowledge of current research and proven strategies to work with at‑risk students and students with diagnosed disabilities. Knowledge of learning disability diagnostic tools and learning strategies for supporting students with learning disabilities. Advanced written and oral communication skills. Experience working with NCAA policies. Campus Security Authority Responsibilities This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. The individual will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual reporting training.
