This Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) role for Rutherford County Schools is centered on providing essential health services to students, under the supervision of an RN. Below is a summary of the key responsibilities, qualifications, and important work ethics for potential candidates.

Position Overview

LPNs in this role will support the health and well-being of students from pre-K through 12th grade. Responsibilities include administering medication, performing medical procedures such as tracheostomy care, and documenting care. The LPN must adhere to the Nurse Practice Act, professional standards, and school board policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with RN: Work alongside the RN assigned to the school, providing direct care and support.
  • Administer Medications and Treatments: Prepare and administer medications following district protocols, understanding purposes and potential side effects.
  • Tracheostomy Care: Perform tracheostomy care in a school setting under RN supervision.
  • Observation and Documentation: Document all care activities, including observations, planning, and evaluations.
  • Emergency Response: Act with first aid knowledge during emergencies.
  • Confidentiality and Communication: Maintain confidentiality and communicate effectively with RN, school personnel, and parents as needed.
Work Ethics

The role requires a strong commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, punctuality, and cooperation. Adherence to safety protocols, including universal precautions and aseptic technique, is essential.

Dress Code

LPNs should wear scrubs or a lab coat over business-casual attire, avoiding jeans, perfumes, colognes, and smoking on school grounds.

Qualifications
  • LPN License: Must have an active Tennessee LPN license in good standing.
  • Nursing Program Graduate: Completion of a Practical Nurse program with at least two years of recent experience in areas such as pediatric, school, or community health nursing.
  • Reliable Transportation: Must have a vehicle to travel between schools (mileage reimbursement provided).
  • Physical Ability: Capable of performing tasks that may involve lifting, bending, and other physical activities.
Terms of Employment

This is a full-time, 10-month, non-tenured position within the Rutherford County School system.
