The State of New Hampshire, Department of Health and Human Services and New Hampshire Hospital has a full-time vacancy for Maintenance Mechanic II.

Summary:

To provide emergency maintenance coverage for New Hampshire Hospital and associated buildings and grounds during evenings, weekends, and holidays, as a sole representative of the Maintenance Department. To operate and perform preventive maintenance on physical plant equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education : High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and completion of an apprenticeship in one of the skilled trades as required in the performance of job accountabilities.
Experience: Two years' experience in general maintenance and repair work associated with one or more of the following areas: carpentry, electricity, painting, plumbing, masonry, sheet metal work, welding, auto repair or related trade experience. Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the trade area for which the agency is recruiting. Two additional years of approved work experience may be substituted for the required apprenticeship in one of the skilled trades.
License/Certification : Must possess a valid New Hampshire driver's license. Must possess proof of completion or successfully complete the State's Safe Driving Program within the first six (6) months of employment. As a condition of and prior to hire, the applicant must have verified their current New Hampshire driving record supplied by the Dept. of Safety, Division of Motor Vehicles indicating no major traffic violations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS : Preference will be given to applicants with two years' experience in general maintenance and repair work associated with one or more of the following areas: electricity, plumbing, HVAC, or boilers.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must have physical ability to climb ladders, walk, kneel, carry tools, and position materials. Must demonstrate the ability to lift 80 pounds from the floor to a 30-inch table, to climb a 10-foot stepladder and work at 12-foot height over a ceiling, and to walk 200 yards carrying a 25-pound toolbox, and squat or kneel for one minute while working down low.
2. Schedule will require working 16 hours on first shift and 64 hours on second or third shift as assigned during a two-week pay period.
3. Experience must demonstrate ability to exercise sound judgment in deciding safe and effective methods for resolving maintenance problems and to work independently with minimal supervision. Must have demonstrated ability to carry out oral and written orders.

Responsibilities :

  • Responds to requests for emergency maintenance work. Repairs doors, hardware, and other systems as time and capability permits. Clears plumbing fixtures and replaces lamps. Ensures occupant safety in cases of broken furniture and glass.
  • Prioritizes requests and resolves those within his/her capabilities. Exercises independent judgment when communicating with Clinical Staff to determine if repairs and services can wait until the next day or otherwise contacts Engineer-on-Call for immediate assistance.
  • Keeps records of work requested and/or accomplished during shift. Records readings on performance of physical plant equipment.
  • Operates and performs preventive maintenance on boilers, pumps, chillers, emergency generators, HVAC controls, fire detection and protection equipment, other physical plant equipment, and a light truck.
  • Holds fire drills for building personnel.
  • Communicates via cell phone and pager with other Maintenance personnel and Security.

Complies with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures by:

  • Performing accountabilities in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Communicating with supervisors' issues related to workplace safety (i.e., ergonomics, body mechanics, environment, equipment ...).
  • Reporting on the job injuries to supervisor IMMEDIATELY.
  • Attending training programs, as appropriate.
