Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing food processing and packaging equipment to support safe, efficient, and compliant operations. This role supports the facility’s SQF certified food safety and quality management system by ensuring equipment, utilities, and infrastructure are maintained in sanitary, safe operating condition. The position requires strict compliance with OSHA safety standards, including Lockout/Tagout (29 CFR 1910.147), electrical safety, and confined space requirements, with familiarity supporting boiler systems, ammonia refrigeration systems, and wastewater treatment operations as applicable. Essential functions must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.


Essential Functions

Equipment Maintenance & Repair (SQF – Equipment & Infrastructure)

  • Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on food processing, packaging, and facility equipment
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
  • Repair or replace worn, damaged, or defective components
  • Verify equipment is restored to safe, sanitary operating condition prior to production release

Food Safety & Sanitary Design Compliance

  • Perform maintenance activities using hygienic maintenance practices to prevent product contamination
  • Protect exposed product zones and food-contact surfaces during maintenance
  • Identify and report equipment conditions that may pose food safety or foreign material risks
  • Support allergen and preventive maintenance programs


Lockout/Tagout (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147)

  • Perform lockout/tagout procedures prior to servicing, maintenance, or repair activities
  • Apply and remove personal lock(s) and tag(s) in accordance with the facility Energy Control Program
  • Verify isolation of all hazardous energy sources and confirm zero-energy state
  • Maintain control of lockout devices and keys throughout maintenance activities
  • Never bypass or defeat guards, interlocks, or safety devices

Electrical Safety (OSHA / NFPA 70E Awareness)

  • Perform electrical work only within the scope of training and authorization
  • Follow electrical safety procedures, including verification of de-energized equipment prior to work
  • Use appropriate tools, PPE, and safeguards when working on or near electrical systems
  • Identify and report electrical hazards, damaged components, or unsafe conditions

Confined Space Safety (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146)

  • Comply with the facility’s Confined Space Entry Program
  • Participate in confined space entry only after required training and authorization
  • Follow permit-required confined space procedures, including atmospheric testing, ventilation, and attendant requirements
  • Never enter confined spaces without proper permits, monitoring, and controls in place

Boiler & Utility Systems (Support Role)

  • Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance tasks on boiler systems and related utilities within scope of training
  • Monitor boiler operation indicators and report abnormal conditions
  • Support licensed or certified boiler operators as required
  • Follow boiler safety procedures and escalation protocols

Wastewater Treatment Familiarity (Support Role)

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of onsite wastewater treatment processes and system components
  • Perform basic maintenance or inspections on wastewater equipment as assigned and trained
  • Identify and report operational issues, alarms, or environmental concerns
  • Support environmental compliance activities under direction of qualified personnel

Ammonia Refrigeration System Familiarity (OSHA / EPA Awareness)

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of anhydrous ammonia refrigeration systems and associated hazards
  • Perform maintenance tasks on ammonia systems only within scope of training and authorization
  • Follow site ammonia safety procedures, PPE requirements, and emergency response protocols
  • Identify and report ammonia leaks, alarms, or unsafe conditions immediately
  • Support preventive maintenance, inspections, and documentation for ammonia systems
  • Comply with applicable OSHA PSM (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA RMP requirements as directed


Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Follow all OSHA and site safety requirements, including PPE, hazard communication, and emergency response procedures
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, and near misses immediately
  • Support FSMA Preventive Controls related to equipment and facility maintenance

Documentation & Recordkeeping (SQF – Records & Verification)

  • Complete maintenance work orders, PM records, inspection logs, and LOTO documentation accurately
  • Document repairs, parts usage, and equipment status changes
  • Maintain records required for audits, inspections, and compliance verification

Collaboration & Support

  • Coordinate maintenance activities with production, sanitation, QA, and utilities teams
  • Support sanitation during equipment teardown and reassembly
  • Assist with line startups, changeovers, and shutdowns

Attendance & Reliability

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance
  • Respond to emergency maintenance calls and work off-shift, weekend, or on-call schedules as required


Marginal (Non-Essential) Functions

  • Assist with installation or modification of equipment and utilities
  • Participate in continuous improvement, reliability, or capital projects
  • Support special maintenance or facility initiatives


Required Qualifications

  • Ability to safely perform maintenance tasks following training and authorization
  • Ability to comply with LOTO, electrical safety, and confined space requirements
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills




Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; technical or trade school preferred
  • Prior experience in food manufacturing or regulated environments
  • Experience with preventive maintenance programs
  • Designation as an OSHA-defined authorized employee for LOTO
  • Confined space entry training
  • Electrical safety or NFPA 70E awareness training
  • Familiarity with boiler systems and wastewater treatment operations
  • Experience working in SQF or BRCGS-certified facilities


Physical Demands (ADA-Compliant)

  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, climb, and work in confined or elevated areas
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to use hand tools and powered equipment
