JOB DESCRIPTION:

Incumbent will serve as Medical Director for Clemson Rural Health (CRH). In this capacity will fulfill medical director expectations for Rural Health Clinics outlined in 42 CFR 491.8(a)(6)(b). Responsible for overall medical direction of clinical activities. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:


50% - Essential - Provides direct clinical care to patients. Medical Director will provide clinical care to patients in CRH fixed clinics, mobile health units, telehealth platforms, and remote patient monitoring technologies (when applicable). Clinical encounter visits will be properly documented within the electronic health record. Quality of the clinical encounter notes will support high quality health care and meet requirements for billing to insurance companies. Medical Director must use the CRH electronic health record (currently MUSC Epic Connect) as well as associated functionality (e.g., MyChart).

15% - Essential - Serves as formal mentor for advanced practice provider (APPs) employees of Clemson Rural Health. Medical Director will mentor, documented in SC-mandated mentoring agreements for APPs (e.g., Family Nurse Practitioners) of CRH. Fulfills requirements of the mentoring role including clinical chart review and feedback as outlined in CRH policies and other policies mandates by accrediting agencies or insurance providers. Mentoring tasks may be extended to student / trainees such as medical students completing rural health rotations with CRH.

15% - Essential - Serves as a key member of the CRH leadership team. Medical Director serves as a key member of the CRH leadership team, advising the Director and other leaders of medical-related issues and considerations. In this role will also systematically reviews the CRH quality measures and outcomes, reviews mandatory quality reporting requirements, helps the team implement clinical protocols and practices grounded in best evidence, serve on committees within and external to the university, assist the Director through liaison and networking with other physicians. Serves medical oversight role for the Medical Surveillance Program.

15% - Essential - Engages in clinical research as Site PI on commercial clinical trials or PI, Co-PI, or Co-I on CRH led research studies. The Medical Director completes and maintains all mandatory training to conduct clinical research. Serves as Site PI on commercial trials and one of several different roles on investigator-initiated research. Assists the Director and study PIs on review of data safety monitoring of research studies. Assists the Director and study PIs on contributing/editing scientific manuscripts, posters, research proposals, or related efforts. Assists the CRH leadership team in resolving related disputes.

5% - Essential - Reviews quality improvement plans and documentation as well as medical incident/ patient safety reports with the Clemson CRH designated individuals, offering opinions and recommendations (as warranted). Reviews and approves as Medical Director the CRH policy and procedures manual (and all revisions). Consulst on medical appropriateness of new policies and procedures.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Education - Earned medical degree (DO, MD)
Work Exp 5+ years practicing medicine in the U.S. with leadership responsibilities

  • Medical Director shall have and maintain all necessary credentials and qualifications to serve in that role.
  • Current/valid SC License to practice medicine (MD/DO)
  • Current board certification in a physician specialty

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:


Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Internal Medicine

Previous experience as a Medical Director for a health-related organization.
