The Department of Pathology is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician to provide perform a variety of laboratory procedures in Tissue Bank and Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Lab with many involving numerous steps and techniques that require the use of professional judgement. This position is 100% time, Monday Friday, 8-hour shifts between 0630 and 1700, with rotating on-call for overnights, weekends, and holidays.

The Department of Pathology is part of UI Health Care, a comprehensive health sciences center that serves Iowa and the region, as well as patients referred from the United States and overseas. Duties To Include
- Prepares and freezes progenitor cell or lymphocyte products. Adds appropriate volumes of DMSO and media to the product based on the final volume.
- Prepares progenitor cells or lymphocyte products for fresh infusion or shipment to outside facilities.
- Perform daily operations in the tissue bank.
- Processes bone marrow in preparation for appropriate treatment.
- Performs bone marrow buffy coat preparations as needed.
- Processes cryopreserved umbilical cord blood products.
- Thaws, issues and transports cellular therapy products.

MLS Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution.
- Six (6) months one (1) year clinical laboratory experience, which may include program training experience is required.
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist certification in the appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Bachelors degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution, OR
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or eligible from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA), OR
- Successfully completed an official US military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory specialist (Laboratory Technician) is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Experience in Tissue Banking (providing human tissue for surgical reimplantation).
- Experience in a Human Progenitor Cell Laboratory.
- Demonstrated ability to perform simple and multipart mathematical calculations.
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant healthcare experience (which could include clinical or healthcare research) is highly desirable.
