About the job We’re looking for a detail-oriented professional to join our team in a role that helps protect one of our most important public resources—safe, reliable drinking water. In this position, you’ll support the daily operations of our water quality laboratory, performing a variety of technical and analytical tasks that help ensure the water we provide meets all federal and state regulatory standards. Responsibilities Laboratory experience required. Must have in-depth knowledge of surface water treatment processes and equipment used in the facility. Previous operations preferred in the water and/or wastewater industries. Must have excellent verbal, written, and supervisory skills. Ability to relate well to employees at all levels, customers, and communities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office required. Must have high school diploma or equivalent. A relevant Bachelor of Science (biology, microbiology, environmental science, etc.). Valid Georgia driver’s license. Key Job Functions A. Ensure all lab analysts are qualified in accordance with EPD standards (EPD V-1). This includes maintaining personal records of all laboratory analysts (academic background, transcripts, training courses, certifications, proficiency testing). B. Routinely update and oversee implementation of the written and approved quality control program in accordance with EPD requirements. Maintenance of written Quality Control (QC) records required by the state for inspection. C. Routinely update and oversee implementation of the written and approved quality assurance program in accordance with EPD requirements. Maintenance of written Quality Assurance (QA) records required by the state for inspection. D. Routinely update and oversee implementation of the written and approved safety plan in accordance with EPD requirements and OSHA standards. Serve as the laboratory’s primary safety officer. Inclusion of a Chemical Hygiene Plan. Maintenance of written safety plan and records of laboratory safety training. Conduct and implement annual safety training of laboratory employees. E. Administer routine and EPD sanctioned laboratory training, including a yearly ethics training and quarterly proficiency testing (PT) in accordance with EPD requirements. Maintain records of required training and PTs. F. Maintain laboratory certification for the analytical methods used for compliance testing. (Colilert P/A and membrane filtration.) G. Routinely update and oversee the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for each laboratory process and Chain of Custodies for samples. Maintain records of all SOPs and Chain of Custodies in accordance with EPD standards. H. Maintain laboratory data and report results in the secure, EPD-approved database. I. Serve as primary laboratory contact for federal agencies. Responsible for notifying the EPD of positive coliform results as required by law. J. Ensure correct disposal of hazardous microbiological waste. K. Schedule or perform maintenance on laboratory equipment. Replace laboratory equipment as necessary or at least prior to expiration date. L. Perform EPD approved analysis methods to determine presence/absence of total coliforms and E. Coli in samples. Analyze and treat water accordingly. M. Educate and provide appropriate documentation to sample collectors regarding EPD-approved methods to ensure samples meet the EPD’s requirements. N. Responsible for managing analytical supply inventory and facilitating purchasing of supplies as needed. Algae Lab A. Collect and store algae samples according to correct holding procedures. Implement chain of custody documents as needed. B. Routinely update and implement SOPs following EPD Methods 544 and 546 for cyanotoxin analysis. This includes Piedmont Water’s own QA and QC measures. C. Complete Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) proficiency testing for drinking water and surface water samples. (Offered biannually by Gold Standard Diagnostic.) D. Perform ELISA testing for cyanotoxins. Analyze data, interpret results, and create relevant reports. E. Perform Imaging FlowCytobot (IFCB) analysis for algal enumeration. Analyze data, interpret results, and formulate relevant reports. F. Train newly hired laboratory employees in ELISA analysis and IFCB operation. Chemistry Lab A. Coordinate weekly THM sampling schedule. Ensure all samples meet EPD standards for THM analysis. B. Proficiently operate the THM Analyzer (an automated gas chromatography apparatus) for analysis of water samples. C. Submit results to appropriate parties in a timely manner. Maintain a database of all records and results. D. Schedule and execute yearly analyzer maintenance via AMS. General Duties A. Assist with all other special tasks and projects as directed by management. B. This job is considered emergency essential and will be required to report to work during inclement weather or when an emergency arises. C. Will be required to adhere to the use of appropriate personal protective equipment related to plant operation and maintenance. D. Ability to work night, day, weekends, and/or holidays. E. Perform related shift duties as needed. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Position requires sitting, walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, lifting, pushing, pulling, and moving items. Requires the ability to move around an office, the plant, and outside. Requires the ability to maneuver tools and/or heavy equipment when necessary. Requires identifying and reading reports. Requires recognizing, identifying and using tools and necessary construction and/or maintenance equipment which may require a high degree of dexterity.
