OVERVIEW
The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is a public-facing unit of the University, and is
an accredited museum and public garden welcoming more than 600,000 annual visitors. The
Arboretum includes 1,200 acres of gardens, collections and natural areas. Its Horticultural
Research Center is the home of cold-hardy plant research and introductions. The University of
Minnesota has two foundations: University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) and the Minnesota
Landscape Arboretum Foundation (MLAF).

The Arboretums development team is one of four teams in the Advancement Department,
joined by membership, gift administration and marketing and communications. The
development team includes major giving, annual giving, grant writing, memorial and tribute
giving, planned giving, estate administration, stewardship and donor relations, and it supports
the Arboretums mission by deepening relationships and aligning donor passions with the
Arboretums financial goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

75% Manage Dynamic Donor Portfolio
  • Responsible primarily for the independent management of a dynamic portfolio of
donors, including current, discovery and stewardship portfolios
  • Strategically plan engagement opportunities to help constituents progress on a
relationship continuum.
  • Identify unique, donor-specific ways to cultivate and engage donors, culminating in
major gift solicitation.
  • Utilize various giving methods such as current, deferred giving, and non-cash gifts
  • Support both annual and long-term fundraising goals of the Minnesota Landscape
Arboretum Foundation, securing both annual gifts for operations and
capital/endowment gifts for new projects, focusing on defined fundraising priorities.
  • Identify and match donor passions with Arboretum funding needs; develop proposals
and written materials in support of specific Arboretum fundraising initiatives.
  • Clear and coordinate prospective donors through appropriate procedures to ensure
effective solicitation of the donor that maximizes the gift to the Arboretum and the
donor's satisfaction with the institution
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of all Arboretum gardens, programs,
horticultural research and capital projects. Use this knowledge to match donor
philanthropic goals with institutional needs.
  • Coordinate with internal Arboretum experts as appropriate to identify customized
major gift opportunities for donors. Involve experts in gift discussions as needed to
maximize gift results.
  • Identify donors who are best candidates for planned giving and collaborate with the
teams planned giving officer to develop appropriate strategies for long-term
engagement.
  • Utilize complex gift structures when appropriate to meet donor and Arboretum
needs.
  • Collaborate with prospect development partners as needed or requested.
  • Complete goal-based activities as defined in the gift officer matrix, such as soliciting
and funding a specific number of gifts, completing contact reports, qualifying and
disqualifying prospective donors.
  • Collaborate with University of Minnesota Foundation (UMF) professionals and utilize
UMF centralized resources to achieve and exceed established standards and metrics
for the position.

15% Administration
  • Develop a strong understanding of gifts and sponsorships as outlined in U of M policy.
  • Provide leadership with regular reports on progress and results of the prospect
solicitation process and portfolio.
  • Review research reports and all available information from the University Donor
Management System database and the Arboretums CRM on assigned donors and
prospects.
  • File timely contact reports, maintain accurate records and provide updated
information for the Arboretum's CRM and the UMF CRM.
  • Work with the Lead Development Officer and/or Managing Director of Development
to ensure that gifts are utilized in line with donors intentions.

10% Other
  • Attend donor-related events and Board of Trustee meetings as requested.
  • Attend team meetings and other meetings as requested.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
