The Memorial Union (MU) is the campus student union and a department of the division of Student Affairs. The MU is geographically located in the middle of the campus and is considered the living room of campus. The MU welcomes students, faculty, staff, visitors and the local community to campus, and its mission is to provide learning experiences and opportunities for personal growth in an open, inclusive and resource-rich community where student and staff collaborate with a Student Advisory Board, who are influential to the character and scope of the department and provide the budget recommendations for the facilities the MU is charged with, services and programs.
The purpose of the position is to serve as a member of the Guest Services Event Staff located in the Memorial Union. Guest Services Event Support is a high-profile position. Customers observe and experience staff behaviors and communication styles. Professional behavior means exhibiting a courteous and businesslike manner in the workplace. This behavior is expected at all times when a staff member is in the Memorial Union working or on personal business.
This is an entry level position with opportunities of advancement and professional development. The staff will perform setup and teardown of reservable spaces and other operations needed to support successful events. This position works as a team in collaboration with the leadership of student Setup Coordinators. Successful candidates hold in high regard dependability, clear and respectful communication, and teamwork. These are essential in creating a nurturing, engaging, and sustainable environment.
New hires for this position will participate in event setup crew shifts in order to get to know the building and proper use of MU equipment. There are opportunities for advancement and are based on interest, performance and opportunities at the time. Some of those opportunities include training for lead positions such as setup coordinator, event management, customer service desks, event specialist or tech positions, and event coordination.
Position Duties
- Provide excellent customer service to all clients and guests
- Work collaboratively with MU staff to set up/tear down event spaces, matching the layout, design, and expectations requested by the client
- Moving, storage, and setup of equipment: tables, chairs, staging, canopies, projectors, screens, microphones, speakers, etc.
