Job Description and Duties
Under the direction of the Community Resource Manager, the Native American Spiritual Leader is to provide spiritual and moral guidance to inmates and to conduct and/or facilitate Native American spiritual ceremonies, oral traditions and cultural studies. To meet the criteria for monthly Inmate Pay, you must supervise a minimum of 2 inmate workers, who substantially replace civil service employees for a combined total of at least 173 hours per month. In addition, you must attach a letter to your monthly CDCR 998-A, Employee Attendance Record certified by your supervisor that the criteria to receive Inmate Pay was met allowing the Personnel Office to proceed with monthly Inmate Pay. CDCR 998-As submitted without the required certification will be sufficient cause to discontinue the monthly Inmate Pay incentive. Employees receiving Inmate Pay are responsible for retention of inmate timesheets at each worksite. When inmates are unassigned, it is your responsibility to contact the Inmate Assignments Office to have inmates assigned to meet the above criteria. If the criteria is not met, you are not entitled to receive Inmate Pay and you must notify the Personnel Office immediately. In order to reinstate the Inmate Pay, you must notify the Personnel Office as soon as the criteria is met.
This is a 12 month Limited Term position that may be extended to 24 months, with the possibility of becoming permanent.

Special Requirements

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If you are meeting Minimum Qualifications with education, you must include your unofficial transcripts/diploma for verification. Official transcripts may be required upon appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.
Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
Pursuant to the Public Health Orders (Guidance for the Use of Face Coverings and State and Local Correctional Facilities and Detention Centers Health Care Worker Vaccination Requirement) issued by the California Department of Public Health and the directive Mandatory COVID 19 Vaccines and Testing for Institution Staff issued by the Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation (CDCR), all staff assigned to this post/position may be required to show evidence of full vaccination and booster for COVID-19, absent an approved reasonable medical or religious accommodation precluding them from vaccination.

Ability to: Organize, prepare, and conduct Native American ceremonies and cultural events; instruct activities in Native American music and in the oral tradition; counsel institution residents and their families on moral and ethical problems; establish rapport with institution residents; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
