Main Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for managing the Deer Project for the Wildlife and Heritage Service (WHS), an agency within Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The incumbents role is to ensure the conservation of deer, their habitats, and ecological relationships for the citizens of the state. The employee identifies, implements, and supervises scientifically based management strategies for white-tailed and sika deer (collectively termed deer in this document) in Maryland. The incumbent serves as the Departments expert in all matters relative to the management of these wildlife species. The incumbent provides leadership to inter-agency/multi-state team efforts, guides development of management plans, manages/assesses data, serves as research coordinator, conducts population modeling, oversees public opinion surveys, and influences resource policy/regulatory actions. The employee is considered the scientific expert on these species. The employee is also responsible for responding to extensive customer service needs in a prompt and thorough manner.

POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Heritage Service (WHS) is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Biologist V position. This position is responsible for co-managing white-tailed and sika deer statewide for WHS with another deer project leader. This position will identify, implement, and supervise scientifically based management strategies for white-tailed deer and sika deer (collectively termed deer in this document). This position will serve as the departments expert in all matters relative to the management of these species. Duties include collecting, analyzing, and presenting harvest and research data, reviewing and developing regulations, guiding development of species management plans, and providing leadership to inter-agency/multi-state team efforts. This person serves as research coordinator, conducts population modeling, coordinates public opinion surveys, oversees management of wildlife diseases including Chronic Wasting Disease and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology and six years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management.

Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelors degree in biology, environmental aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university and six years of experience in performing professional biological work in the field of natural resources management for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute graduate education beyond a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a natural resources related field of study as described above at the rate of 15 graduate credit hours for one year of experience for up to two years of the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters degree in wildlife science or one of the closely related fields listed under the Education requirement
  • Three years of experience collecting and analyzing natural resource-based scientific data, and disseminating results through oral presentations, reports or other publications
  • One year of experience engaging with the general public, in a public setting, concerning natural resource issues

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
