Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Washington State Ferry (WSF) system is an essential part of Washington's transportation network with more than 1,800 employees working together to safely and efficiently carry nearly 24 million passengers a year! There are over 400 sailings each day on 9 ferry routes across Puget Sound and through the San Juan Islands, including an international route to Sidney, British Columbia.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Navigation Systems Senior Technician to repair and maintain vital navigational systems including radar, transmitting heading devices, Automatic Indentation Systems (AIS), meteorological sensors, navigation data distribution networks, and voyage data recorders. These systems are vital for the safe operations of WSF vessels and maintain compliance with statutory requirements related to vessel operations.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Navigation Systems Senior Technician will:

  • Identify work to maintain, repair, and troubleshoot shipboard navigation systems.
  • Respond to reports of failure or malfunction in the WSF system on a 24-hour emergency call-out basis.
  • Troubleshoot, test, diagnose, install, maintain, calibrate, repair, and modify various navigation systems.
  • Perform electrical and electronic work pertaining to WSDOT to the codes and standards.
  • Assist in the predictive/preventative maintenance.
  • Executing preventative maintenance activities.
  • Schedule routine and preventative maintenance.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Five (5) years of professional work experience in the installation, testing, and repairing systems in the electrical/electronic field.
  • FCC Element 1, 3, 8, licenses or the ability to obtain these certifications within days of employment.
  • Hold a valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) and First Aid/AED/CPR certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Valid unrestricted Washington State Drivers License.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Current holder for FCC Element 1, 3, 8, licenses.
  • Current holder of FCC Element 9 license.
  • Professional work experience with installing, testing, and repairing shipboard electronic navigation systems.
  • Current ABYC Certification.
