Job Description

About This Role

Solarus is a community-owned broadband provider delivering Internet, TV, and telephone services throughout central Wisconsin. Our Network Services team designs, builds, and supports the infrastructure that makes those services possible.

We are looking for a Network Administrator who wants to take ownership of real infrastructure that serves real people. This is a hands-on role where you will lead network changes, troubleshoot complex issues, plan and execute migrations, and help shape how our network evolves. Our team works across multiple domains, and we invest in our people through training, certifications, and hands-on project work.

What You Will Be Responsible For

You will support and improve Solarus network infrastructure across a range of technology areas. Day to day, that means leading production changes, configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, and other network equipment, managing core services like DNS and DHCP, and executing migrations from planning through validation. You will also work with voice and VoIP platforms, business wireless solutions, and enterprise firewalls. The mix of what you work on will depend on your experience and strengths, but the expectation is broad involvement rather than narrow specialization.

Beyond the technical work, you will serve as an escalation point for other team members, mentor junior staff, create and maintain quality documentation, and collaborate across departments including field operations, central office, and customer-facing teams. You will be expected to identify problems, propose solutions, and follow through until the work is done right.

What You Need

These are genuine requirements. Please apply only if you meet them.

  • Education & Experience: Associate degree in Networking, IT, or Computer Science with 3+ years of relevant experience OR 5+ years of hands-on networking or telecom experience
  • Networking Fundamentals: Solid working knowledge of IP addressing, subnetting, VLANs, and routing concepts
  • Troubleshooting: Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve network issues in a production environment
  • Documentation: Able to create clear technical documentation such as procedures, diagrams, and change records
  • Ownership Mindset: You follow problems through to resolution, communicate proactively, and take responsibility for your work

What Sets You Apart

You do not need all of these. They help us understand where you might fit on the team and at what level.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Industry certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA, JNCIP, CompTIA Network+, Security+, or similar
  • Experience with dynamic routing protocols (OSPF, BGP) in multi-site environments
  • Firewall and security experience (any major vendor platform)
  • Voice or VoIP system experience
  • Wireless design or deployment experience
  • Experience with automation tools (Python, Ansible) or monitoring platforms
  • Experience leading migrations, upgrades, or other high-impact network changes
  • Telecom, ISP, or service provider background

Why Solarus

  • Professional Development: We pay for training and certifications because your growth is our growth
  • Variety: Work across IP, voice, wireless, and security rather than being boxed into one silo
  • Community: We are locally owned and serve the community we live in. Your work has a direct, visible impact on your neighbors.
  • Stability: Telecom infrastructure is essential. This is not a role that gets outsourced or disappears in a downturn.

How to Apply

Submit your resume along with a brief cover letter or paragraph (2-5 sentences) that answers this question:

"Describe a network project or technical challenge you played a key role in. What was the situation, what did you do, and what was the result?"

Applications without this response may not be reviewed. We use this to understand how you think and communicate, not to judge the scale of the project.
