Job Summary
The Network Systems Engineer designs, configures, tests, commissions, and supports communication networks and computing infrastructure that enable Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) systems. This role supports mission-critical environments including SCADA systems, distributed telemetry networks, and industrial control systems.
The engineer is responsible for delivering secure, reliable, and high-availability network and computing solutions supporting control centers, field installations, and remote operational assets, working closely with automation, cybersecurity, and field engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, integrate, configure, and support industrial communication networks and telemetry systems for SCADA and OT environments
- Configure and support network infrastructure including core and edge switches, Layer 3 switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs, radios, and gateways
- Design network topologies and implement VLAN-based segmentation, routing, and secure IT/OT boundaries
- Engineer and support wired and wireless telemetry links, including application of RF propagation principles and radio feasibility assessments
- Design and assemble server rack infrastructure, including racking servers, network devices, power components, and establishing network interconnections to support core network topologies
- Assist with deployment of computer hardware and its interfaces, including servers, workstations, and terminals, to support secure, virtualized implementations for cybersecurity best practices
- Assist with the implementation of hypervisors and operating systems in preparation for use by Automation Engineers supporting SCADA application development for cybersecurity best practices
- Configure and troubleshoot IP-based and serial communications supporting industrial protocols (e.g., DNP3, Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU)
- Apply cybersecurity best practices including segmentation, secure configurations, and encrypted communications
- Perform testing, commissioning (FAT/SAT), troubleshooting, and operational support
- Maintain accurate documentation including network diagrams, rack layouts, and system configurations
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 5+ years of experience supporting industrial, SCADA, or mission-critical communication networks
- Demonstrated experience with Layer 3 switching, VLANs, routed networks, and telemetry systems (experience with Cisco and Palo Hardware desired)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in utilities, energy, manufacturing, or critical infrastructure environments
- Knowledge of RF communications and wireless telemetry systems
- Experience with virtualization platforms and secure OT computing environments
- Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA/CCNP, Network+, Security+, industrial networking or radio certifications)
Work Environment
- Combination of office, industrial facility, and field environments
- Regular travel to project and operational sites
- Must meet safety, training, and site access requirements
