Job Summary:
The Nurse Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the daily operations and clinical practice of the nursing area(s) on a 24-hour basis. This role ensures the provision of safe, individualized patient care to patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric, manages fiscal responsibility through unit budgets, serves as a liaison with medical staff, promotes the growth and development of associates, and ensures patient advocacy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Practice:

    • Implement and monitor operational objectives aligned with Seton Medical Center’s Mission and Surgical/Cath Lab Services direction.

    • Monitor patient care management for the assigned area.

    • Conduct evaluative rounds continuously to ensure safe, competent, and quality patient care.

    • Promote inter- and intra-departmental collaboration in clinical practice management.

    • Ensure compliance with Universal precautions, Infection Control/Safety Policies, and Hazardous Materials Management Program.

    • Evaluate and implement staff development/education to assure quality care delivery based on new technologies and trends.

    • Develop and implement policies and procedures to guide patient care/services.

    • Delegate responsibilities to qualified staff members based on competency.

    • Utilize available nursing resources and support services as necessary.

  • Quality Management:

    • Develop, evaluate, and monitor quality through a formalized process.

    • Complete Quality Improvement activities on a quarterly basis and submit to the Director, Surgical Services, and the Quality Improvement Committee.

    • Analyze data to identify areas for improvement and initiate changes with staff input.

    • Complete safety, Joint Commission, and other checklists to assure compliance.

    • Monitor physician suspensions and ensure compliance with Medical Staff regulations.

  • Financial Accountability/Productivity:

    • Prepare and monitor unit budgets (wage, non-wage, capital, and revenue).

    • Develop systems to monitor and report budget variances.

    • Ensure appropriate staffing levels to meet patient care requirements and productivity standards.

    • Collaborate on developing capital equipment budgets and evaluating proposed equipment purchases.

    • Implement cost-containment measures and evaluate opportunities for savings in supplies, staffing, and equipment.

    • Collaborate with Materials Management to manage purchasing processes and maintain non-wage budget compliance.

    • Communicate budgetary information to staff to increase productivity and efficiency.

  • Human Resource Management/Leadership/Professionalism:

    • Promote participative management and encourage active involvement in decision-making.

    • Role model professionalism through collaboration, networking, problem-solving, and self-promotion.

    • Ensure consistent discipline and resolve conflicts using problem-solving techniques.

    • Conduct personnel activities (hiring, discipline, evaluations) in accordance with hospital policies and collective bargaining agreements.

    • Facilitate change within the work environment and engage staff in the process.

    • Reflect Vincentian Values in all activities and encourage staff adherence.

    • Participate in professional organizations/activities and ensure ethical decision-making in all aspects of management.

    • Provide timely follow-up on patient, physician, and staff concerns.

    • Recognize and reward staff contributions to quality outcomes.

  • Staff Development:

    • Facilitate staff development through both internal and external resources.

    • Assure staff awareness of safety standards, infection control practices, and Universal Precautions.

    • Participate in committees and hospital/nursing activities to represent the unit and staff.

    • Maintain an open-door policy with staff and physicians to address concerns.

    • Conduct routine staff meetings to communicate information and progress toward goals.

    • Initiate and participate in the review and revision of policies and procedures.

    • Complete performance appraisals and provide ongoing feedback to staff.

  • Interpersonal Relationships:

    • Foster a cooperative team environment and share the workload.

    • Communicate a positive and caring attitude toward all contacts.

    • Recognize and utilize appropriate communication lines.

    • Apply problem-solving approaches to resolve job-related issues.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing or equivalent work experience (5+ years).

  • Master's degree in nursing, business, or health-related field preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Peri-op Nursing.

  • At least 2 years of experience in a Peri-op management position preferred.

  • Current CA RN License.

  • BCLS certification.

  • Certified Nursing Administration (C.N.A.) preferred.

Other Skills, Abilities & Knowledge:

  • Full command of the English language (verbal and written).

  • Computer literate and proficient in healthcare-related systems.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Certifications:

  • BCLS certification.

  • Certified Nursing Administration (C.N.A.) preferred.
