Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive medical care to individuals receiving treatment for substance use disorders. This role focuses on conducting detailed physical assessments for newly admitted patients, identifying acute and chronic medical conditions, and support after detox and treatment planning in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

1. New Patient Physical Assessments

      •     Conduct comprehensive history and physical (H&P) examinations upon admission.

      •     Obtain detailed medical, psychiatric, and substance use histories.

      •     Assess for withdrawal risk using evidence-based tools (e.g., CIWA-Ar, COWS).

      •     Identify co-occurring medical and mental health conditions.

      •     Order and interpret laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and screenings.

      •     Determine medical stability for admission or need for higher level of care.

2. Clinical Care & Treatment Planning

      •     Develop initial medical treatment plans in collaboration with the care team.

      •     Initiate and manage medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when appropriate.

      •     Prescribe medications in accordance with state and federal regulations.

      •     Monitor and manage withdrawal symptoms and detoxification protocols.

      •     Address acute medical concerns during early treatment.

3. Ongoing Medical Management

      •     Provide follow-up evaluations and medical monitoring.

      •     Manage chronic illnesses (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, hepatitis C).

      •     Coordinate care with primary care providers and specialists as needed.

      •     Participate in case conferences and interdisciplinary treatment planning.

4. Documentation & Compliance

      •     Complete accurate and timely electronic health record (EHR) documentation.

      •     Ensure compliance with state, federal, and accreditation standards.

      •     Maintain appropriate licensure and DEA registration.

5. Patient Education & Support

      •     Educate patients about withdrawal, MAT options, and medical conditions.

      •     Promote harm reduction and relapse prevention strategies.

      •     Support trauma-informed and culturally competent care practices.

Skills & Competencies

      •     Knowledge of substance use disorders and withdrawal management.

      •     Ability to assess medical stability and risk factors.

      •     Strong communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

      •     Crisis management and clinical decision-making abilities.

      •     Compassionate, nonjudgmental approach to patient care.

Requirements

  • Active Nurse Practitioner license in the state of West Virginia.

      •     Board certification (FNP, AGNP, or PMHNP preferred).

      •     DEA registration (X-waiver if applicable for buprenorphine prescribing, if required by state regulations).

      •     Experience in addiction medicine, behavioral health, emergency medicine, or primary care preferred.

      •     Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.


Benefits

This is an hourly 1099 contract, paying $75-90 hour (based on experience).
