The State of New Hampshire, Department of Corrections has a full-time vacancy for Nurse Specialist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university with major study in nursing, human services, psychology, or a related field. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience: Three years' experience as a registered nurse in areas such as ambulatory care, correctional nursing, emergency care, psychiatric nursing, medical surgical nursing, school nursing, pediatrics or other nursing specialty areas related to the certifications noted in the following section, #3. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

License/Certifications:

  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in New Hampshire.
  • Current certification in CPR
  • Certification by the American Nurses Association (ANA) or an organization recognized by the ANA or another nationally recognized certifying entity in a specialty that is consistent with the job accountabilities and appropriate to the institution or agency in which the vacancy exists. This includes the following specialties:

ANCC Certified in Ambulatory Care Nursing, Cardiac-Vascular Nursing, Gerontological Nursing,

Informatics Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing, Nursing Case Management, Nursing Professional

Development, Pain Management Nursing, Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing; NCCHC- Certified

Correctional Health Professional-RN; NCBDE Certified Diabetes Educator; AADE Board Certified-

Advanced Diabetes Management; APIC Certification in Infection Prevention and Control; National

Alliance of Wound Care; Wound Care Certified.

Special Requirements: Successful completion of the Corrections Academy and continuing Certification as correctional line personnel as established by the certifying authority.

Responsibilities:

Plans and organizes nursing care services within a health services center of a correctional facility.

Provides nursing care through the development and implementation of nursing care plans collaborating with a multidisciplinary team including medical and forensics and security staff.

Assists Nurse Coordinator in development and implementation of a team based care model and primary care nursing for target populations.

Leads the nursing team in developing expertise to serve as a champion in specific clinical areas and ensuring that patient education for specific conditions is included as part of the treatment plan.

Supervises and maintains quality assurance checks on equipment, narcotic counts, infection control and other areas as assigned for policy compliance purposes.

Oversees staff orientation and their ongoing training needs.

Acts as the lead nurse in the absence of the Nurse Coordinator in providing clinical supervision, staff assignments, scheduling and other duties as assigned. Delegates as appropriate.

Collaborates with colleagues and outside health care providers to ensure care coordination for special medical services.

Participates in the quality improvement initiatives to improve patient care, improve population health, and reduce costs.
