The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing Informatics is seeking a 100% Nursing Practice Leader to assist with various nursing initiatives and processes within the Nursing Quality & Safety Centralized Functions Division.

Basic Functions and Responsibility:
To function as a Nursing Practice Leader and change agent for a specific patient population by incorporating the roles of clinical specialist, educator, consultant, practitioner, EBP/researcher and administrator as indicated to support and enhance patient care. Provide leadership and supervision for a specific area of responsibility.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide Leadership and Oversight for Specialized Services or Populations:

  • Provide leadership for nursing care delivery and documentation based on systematic evaluation, evidence-based practice and research.
  • Collaborates with nursing, medical staff and other health professionals in the development and review of policies, procedures, and standards of practice for adult patients for nursing quality.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of nursing quality and education.
  • Serves as an expert resource for nursing quality functions.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates patient care practices for adult patients.
  • Provides leadership in implementing strategies to prevent errors related to nursing quality indicators.
  • Maintains an area of functionality expertise and ownership, while also be able to speak at a high level across workflows involving areas of ownership.

Specialized Services for Nursing Care:

  • Support the conduct of research and translate findings from evidence-based research into clinical practice.
  • Reviews literature and national standards regarding nursing quality indicators. Uses relevant nursing literature to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems related to nursing quality.
  • Works with HCIS to develop best documentation strategies for nursing quality.

Provide Education, Training, and Support:

  • Ensure optimal understanding of quality topics through ongoing education, training, and support.
  • Mentors nursing staff to assure they are competent in identifying and implementing action on nursing sensitive indicators
  • Develops and disseminates patient education material related to nursing quality metrics
  • Demonstrates broad knowledge related to nursing sensitive indicators
  • Provides in-depth education to a variety of audiences (clinical staff, patients, students) through project collaboration, one-on-one sessions, small group demonstrations
  • Communicate detailed, complex medical and technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and issues in healthcare, nursing practice, national and statewide standards and regulations, enterprise policies, protocols, and guidelines as related to clinical practice and the legal implications.
  • Utilizes advanced knowledge and skill of compliance requirements to lead the development and implementation of policies, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Active involvement in regulatory visits and ongoing organizational readiness.
  • Promote safe and effective care delivery through review of events and development of solutions.
  • Collaborate with nursing leaders to support quality and safety initiatives

Quality:

  • Works with the Quality Improvement Program (QuIP) and the Department of Nursing Quality NPLs regarding pressure injury prevention programs/CLABSI/CAUTI/Falls/Palliative Care/pain/blood management strategies and benchmarking with other similar organizations
  • Participates in hospital wide programs and projects to monitor and reduce errors related to nursing sensitive indicators.
  • Participates in Department of Nursing Quality and Safety Committee.

Human Resources Management:

  • Provide direction, evaluative feedback, coaching and counseling to the user community to ensure outcomes are achieved.
  • Identifies professional development opportunities and encourages continuous learning.
  • Ability to manage the successful and smooth transition from current to desired culture, practices, structure, and overall organizational environment.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to interdisciplinary colleagues in multiple areas of specialty, including mentorship and training.

Percent of Time: 100% - 40 hours per week
Schedule: Monday - Friday days

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field. If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a BSN is required
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
  • Considerable (3-5 years) clinical experience in a health care environment of similar size and complexity such as a large medical center or teaching hospital
  • Minimum of 1 year in a clinical leadership role in a similar setting
  • At least 1 year of experience contributing to quality implementation through areas such as design, workflow analysis, education, training, and implementation
  • Ability to lead change in a complex academic healthcare environment and promote the understanding and effective use of information technology across departments
  • Excellent communication skills at the verbal, written and presentation level. Proven ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical staff
  • Proven project management skills: ability to coordinate activities and projects across departments, time management, organization of workload, analytical decision-making skills, attention to detail, and thoroughness.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Suite of products (such as Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint)
  • Experience working independently with a strong focus on customer service
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and interdisciplinary team leadership skills with a commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment

Desired Qualifications:

  • Clinical practice experience at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics
  • Experience using Epic in an ambulatory or hospital setting
  • Certification in nursing specialty or role
  • Ability to assess learning needs and match to the most effective education methods
  • Experience authoring training materials and leading training sessions in a variety of formats
