The Salem Harbor Station (SHS) is a high-efficiency power generation facility fueled by natural gas. It boasts a capacity of 674 megawatts (MW). This facility is structured as two separate 1x1 combined cycle units, with each unit comprising a "7FA.05" combustion turbine generator, a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), and a steam turbine generator. This configuration optimizes the utilization of energy from the combustion of natural gas, making Salem Harbor Station an efficient and reliable source of electricity. Opportunity Summary The Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Technician is tasked with performing all station shift operations, including the start-up and shutdown of main plant components, while ensuring accurate regulation of HRSG and turbine loads. This role demands compliance with safety and environmental protocols, thorough inspections, and maintaining precise records to support the facility's operational excellence. The Technician will also manage water chemistry control, perform preventive maintenance, and collaborate with all departments to achieve the facility's goals. Primary Duties Perform all station shift operations and maintenance, including the start-up and shutdown of main plant components and auxiliaries. Receive and respond to orders and requests from electrical and fuel dispatchers. Operate control panels to regulate the load on the HRSG and turbines, maintaining proper steam temperature and pressure, feedwater and fuel supply, and efficient combustion conditions. Conduct routine plant tours to inspect equipment, providing feedback to the Operations Manager and other employees as directed. Comply with all site safety and environmental requirements and procedures; identify and correct safety and environmental hazards as necessary. Maintain accurate shift operating logs, records, timesheets, work orders, and other administrative documents related to the power plant. Execute the plant safety program, including safe work permits, lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hot work, and other required permits, in accordance with approved procedures. Perform plant switching in accordance with approved procedures and best practices for operations and maintenance. Maintain water chemistry control; conduct analyses of steam, condensate, and water conditions. Operate the water treatment facility and manage chemical handling requirements. Perform confined space entry in accordance with approved procedures and best practices for operations and maintenance. Perform electrical and mechanical inspections, troubleshooting, and maintenance tasks under the direction of management, taking ownership of assigned equipment. Read and record gauges and meters. Perform routine operational tests and adjustments on all power plant systems and components as required. Assist with the development and revision of operations and maintenance-related procedures. Maintain housekeeping standards and duties as required. Perform routine preventive and predictive maintenance on all systems and equipment, supporting corrective maintenance efforts on selected equipment. Perform other duties as necessary to fulfill plant requirements. Assist other team members and collaborate with all departments to support the Facility in achieving its goals. Working Relationships The O&M Technician reports to the Operations Manager.The O&M Technician may also give direction to maintenance personnel on matters pertaining to plant operations. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, safety shoes, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility. Fitness for Duty All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. Work Schedule The O&M Technician works a rotating 12-hour shift schedule. Position may also require extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required. Compensation Initial starting compensation will range from $59.09 to $66.56 per hour. Job Qualifications Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Associate degree in a technical field desirable. A Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Safety Second Class Engineer's License is required. A Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Operator License is required, or the ability to obtain it within six months of hire. Extensive working knowledge of the power plant industry is required. Experience in water chemistry control, water condition analysis, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling is required. Theoretical and practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and plant parameter inspection/recording is highly desirable. Experience with a lockout/tagout program for hazardous energy control is required. Experience with piping and instrument schematics, as well as process controls, is desirable. Working knowledge of a work order management system or computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) is essential. Knowledge of power plant mechanical and electrical equipment, including motors, pumps, boilers, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, pollution control equipment, and AC/DC electrical distribution and control systems, is required, along with associated maintenance functions. Understanding of fundamental principles related to physics, mathematics, AC/DC electrical theory, heat transfer, fluid flow, thermodynamics, and chemistry is necessary. Ability to use basic hand tools, portable electric and pneumatic tools, and basic rigging equipment such as winches, hoists, and slings is required. Ability to locate, troubleshoot, and adjust defects in mechanical equipment, including piping and valve installation and maintenance, is essential. Ability to maintain, install, modify, and troubleshoot plant electrical systems and equipment, including motors and analog/digital instruments and systems, is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Ability to work well with others, be self-directed, and apply creative solutions to unique problems is necessary.
