OSP Construction Supervisor – FTTH & Long-Haul Fiber
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced OSP Construction Supervisor to oversee daily field construction activities for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and long-haul fiber optic projects throughout the United States. This position is responsible for supervising approximately 2-3 underground and/or aerial construction crews while ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with customer quality standards.
The ideal candidate has 5-10 years of telecommunications construction experience with a strong background in underground and aerial fiber construction. This is a travel-intensive position requiring extended field assignments, typically four consecutive weeks in the field followed by one week working remotely from home.
Candidates should possess hands-on knowledge of OSP construction equipment including directional drill rigs, plows, trenchers, mini excavators, and aerial construction equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise the daily activities of 2-3 construction crews performing underground and aerial fiber optic construction.
- Coordinate field activities with Construction Managers, Project Managers, subcontractors, utility companies, and customers.
- Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and customer construction standards.
- Monitor daily production, crew performance, quality, and project progress.
- Conduct daily field inspections to verify workmanship, productivity, and adherence to engineering designs.
- Provide technical guidance and direction to field crews regarding construction methods and best practices.
- Assist in scheduling labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractor resources.
- Identify construction issues and work with project leadership to develop timely solutions.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, production quantities, safety documentation, and project records.
- Perform site visits including:
- Pre-construction meetings
- Daily construction inspections
- Quality assurance reviews
- Punch list inspections
- Project closeout inspections
- Ensure proper restoration practices are followed and completed to customer specifications.
- Verify all work complies with local permitting requirements, utility standards, and traffic control regulations.
- Assist with subcontractor production tracking and invoice verification.
- Support weekly progress meetings with customers and internal project teams.
- Promote a strong safety culture by ensuring crews follow OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
Required Qualifications
- 5-10 years of telecommunications outside plant (OSP) construction experience.
- Experience supervising multiple field crews on FTTH, backbone, middle-mile, or long-haul fiber projects.
- Strong knowledge of underground fiber construction including directional drilling, plowing, trenching, conduit installation, and restoration.
- Experience with aerial fiber construction and utility pole infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of OSP construction equipment including drill rigs, plows, trenchers, mini excavators, and related equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, utility prints, permits, and engineering packages.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience working directly with subcontractors and field personnel.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and mobile construction reporting applications.
- Ability to work independently in fast-paced construction environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred at the time of hire.
- Candidates without a CDL must obtain one within the first 90 days of employment.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
- Experience supporting rural broadband or BEAD-funded fiber construction projects.
- Knowledge of utility locating, restoration, permitting, and traffic control practices.
Travel Requirements
- Travel required: 75%-80% throughout the United States.
- Typical work rotation consists of four (4) weeks in the field followed by one (1) week working remotely from home.
- Must be willing to stay away from home for up to 30 consecutive days.
- Valid driver's license required.
Physical Requirements
- Position is primarily field-based and requires working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Frequent walking over uneven terrain and active construction sites.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and inspect construction work throughout the day.
- Regular use of hands and arms to operate mobile devices, measuring tools, and construction equipment.
- Exposure to construction noise, dust, heavy equipment, and changing weather conditions.
- Ability to safely work around active construction crews and heavy machinery while maintaining situational awareness.
