Job Title: Outpatient Pharmacist Job Summary

The Outpatient Pharmacist is responsible for providing safe, accurate, and timely pharmaceutical care to patients in an ambulatory or retail-based healthcare setting. This role focuses on medication dispensing, patient counseling, prescription verification, and collaboration with healthcare providers to ensure optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review, verify, and dispense prescription medications accurately and in compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations
  • Provide patient counseling on medication usage, dosage, side effects, interactions, and storage
  • Assess prescriptions for clinical appropriateness, contraindications, and potential drug interactions
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals regarding medication therapy
  • Perform medication therapy management (MTM) and provide clinical recommendations as appropriate
  • Ensure compliance with pharmacy laws, DEA regulations, and accreditation standards
  • Maintain accurate patient profiles and pharmacy documentation in electronic systems
  • Oversee pharmacy technicians and support staff, ensuring proper workflow and quality control
  • Manage inventory, including ordering, storage, expiration monitoring, and controlled substances
  • Respond to patient questions and resolve medication-related issues professionally
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs

Required Qualifications
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited school of pharmacy
  • Active, unrestricted Pharmacist license in the state of practice
  • Strong knowledge of outpatient pharmacy operations and clinical guidelines
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Proficiency with pharmacy management systems and electronic health records (EHR)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous outpatient, retail, or ambulatory care pharmacy experience
  • Experience with high-volume dispensing environments
  • Familiarity with insurance processing, prior authorizations, and third-party billing
  • Experience with immunizations (if applicable by state law)
  • BLS certification (often required in hospital outpatient settings)
