The Husky Union Building (HUB) is a 275,000 sq. ft. facility that serves as the center of the UW community life and complements the student experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs. Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Prepare surfaces for painting or finishing; Make repairs in sheetrock, metal, wood and masonry surfaces; Tape and flush smooth wall sheetrock joints; apply texture materials to walls and ceilings. Install wall protection materials such as Acrovyn or chair rail crash guards. Repair/replace wall fabric.
  • Apply primers, sealers, stains, under coats and finish coats using a variety of methods and techniques.
  • Prepare and finish or refinish wood work and cabinets
  • Move furniture and place protective drop cloths, tape baseboards, glass and other surfaces as needed; Return moved furniture and clean work area when job is done; Clean brushes, rollers and other equipment with appropriate cleaners to keep equipment and tools in good working condition.
  • Order paint and paint supplies. Manage the departments paint inventory, making sure new paint matches the current colors used in the building using drawdowns etc. Adhere to all safety requirements disposing of old paint and related materials according to EH&S.
  • Ability to use various hand and power tools in our shop. Drills, saws etc.
  • Skill in assembly and installation of various wall accessories. Bulletin boards, T.V. monitors, cord management, art work with security hardware, shelves including floating, mug racks, furniture, etc. and signage throughout building. Install soap dispensers and paper towel holders when needed.
  • Maintain signage throughout the building. Maintain Toter castors and painted stencils on garbage cans.
  • Install and work from a variety of work platforms including scaffolding, ladders and aerial lifts.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce all shop safety procedures using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Develop preliminary cost estimates for installation and repairs.
  • May direct helpers as needed.
  • May perform work in other trades.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a painter, OR full-journey status as a painter in a union, OR four years applicable work experience.
  • Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license required.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    Supervision

  • Direct supervision from the HUB Assistant Director of Facilities.
  • The successful candidate will work independently in the normal course of a given work day, but will be available for direction from the HUB Assistant Director of Facilities.

    Standard shift: M-F; 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
