Position Summary

The RN Labor and Delivery provides patient-centered nursing care across the full spectrum of perinatal services, including labor, delivery, postpartum, neonatal care, and recovery from C-section procedures. The RN will work collaboratively with physicians, midwives, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, high-quality outcomes for mothers and infants while supporting family-centered care.

Key Responsibilities Labor, Delivery & Postpartum Care
  • Provide focused 1:1 labor support, including patient monitoring, interventions, vaginal exams, pain management, and comfort measures.

  • Monitor and interpret fetal heart rate tracings using current NICHD standards.

  • Assist with deliveries, OB procedures, and newborn assessments.

  • Provide education and breastfeeding support to new mothers.

  • Care for patients recovering from C-sections, including pain management, wound care, and discharge planning.

  • Manage high-risk obstetric or neonatal cases, stabilize, and prepare for transport if necessary.

Clinical Practice & Patient Care
  • Conduct thorough nursing assessments, including patient history, physical exams, and care planning.

  • Administer age-appropriate medications and treatments, monitor patient responses, and adjust care accordingly.

  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to implement and evaluate individualized care plans.

  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of all nursing interventions, assessments, and patient education.

  • Serve as a patient advocate and provide emotional, psychological, and informational support to patients and families.

Education & Leadership
  • Educate patients and families on labor, delivery, recovery, and newborn care.

  • Participate in staff education and departmental in-services.

  • Serve as a resource for CNAs and junior nursing staff.

  • Take initiative in unit goal setting and quality improvement activities.

Compliance & Professional Development
  • Adhere to hospital policies, infection control protocols, and ACOG standards.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold the seven Standards of Excellence.

  • Attend required meetings, complete competencies, and participate in ongoing professional development.

  • Fulfill on-call requirements and float to other units as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • May provide guidance and supervision to Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and other support staff.

Education, Certifications & Licensure
  • Required:

    • Current, unrestricted RN license in Alaska or another U.S. state (Alaska license must be obtained prior to start).

    • High school diploma or equivalent.

    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Required within 6 months of hire:

    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

  • Preferred:

    • Commissioned Corps Officers must meet billet description for O-2 to O-3.

Experience
  • Preferred:

    • At least 1 year of clinical nursing experience.

    • Previous experience in Labor and Delivery or perinatal nursing.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Nursing processes including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Pharmacology and safe medication administration practices.

  • Labor and delivery protocols and post-operative care standards.

  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.

Skills in:

  • Operating medical equipment (e.g., EKGs, defibrillators, suction devices).

  • Fetal monitoring and interpretation.

  • Emergency response and critical thinking.

  • Clear oral and written communication.
