The Virginia Department of Health Profession's (DHP) mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to health care practitioners and the public.

The Pharmacy Inspector is a part-time sworn position that enforces the rules and regulations of DHP's 13 health regulatory boards as well as all associated Virginia statutes and federal laws in order to safeguard the lives, health, and safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth. Principal duties include independently inspecting pharmacies and other entities regulated by DHP. Additional duties include consulting on investigations and/or independently investigating a variety of complaints of alleged violations against health care practitioners licensed, certified, or registered by the Department. Responsible for submitting clear and thorough inspection and investigative reports.


Minimum Qualifications

Recent, progressive experience conducting inspections or investigations.

Comprehensive knowledge, skills, and abilities related to inspection and/or investigative techniques, to include interviewing, data collection and analysis of complex records and reports.

  • Considerable, demonstrated ability to:
  • interpret and apply laws and regulations;
  • effectively and independently organize and manage time and assignments;
  • compose clear, comprehensive, and concise inspection reports;
  • communicate effectively both orally and in writing with impartiality, objectivity, and confidentiality

Must able to work as a member of a team and have effective interpersonal skills and self-direction.

  • Skill in the use of a personal computer with standard office software for report writing, information exchange, online research, and database management (to include electronic file management and queries).

  • Must be able to travel, including some overnight travel, to areas within the region in an efficient time frame based upon typical travel times and sensitivity of assignment; and to use a privately-owned vehicle when necessary.

  • Must be willing to perform mobile work and to maintain a remote office with high-speed Internet access, within assigned district(s) or within a 30-mile radius of the below district border(s) as a condition of employment.

Primary Assigned Region III (TIDEWATER), District 1 Counties of Greensville, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Surry, and Sussex; and the independent cities of Emporia, Franklin, and Suffolk. Region III, District 2 Counties of Charles City, New Kent, Gloucester, James City, and York; and the independent cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, Isle of Wight, and the independent city Suffolk. Region III, District 2 Independent cities of Hampton, Newport News, and Poquoson. Region III, District 3 Counties of Accomack, Northampton; and the independent cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach.



  • Additional outside region coverage at times may be requested for: (CENTRAL) Region II, District 2 Counties of Chesterfield and Dinwiddie, Region II, District 3 Counties of Caroline, Essex, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King William, Powhatan, and King and Queen; and the independent city of Richmond. Region I (NOVA) Region I, District 2 Counties of Culpeper, Fauquier; King George, Orange, Spotsylvania, and Stafford; and the independent city of Fredericksburg.

Additional Considerations

The following are advantageous but not required:
  • Licensure as a Virginia Pharmacist.
  • Experience working as a pharmacist and/or regulatory or law enforcement professional.
  • Licensure, registration or certification with current work experience as a health care practitioner and/or current, formal work experience independently conducting various types of healthcare investigations, including but not limited to fraud; risk management; quality assurance; background checks; human resource; or criminal, civil and/or regulatory investigations.
  • A working knowledge of health care/medical terminology in order to interpret health care records and communicate with health care professionals, and of federal or state health care laws and regulations.
  • Prior experience working with administrative law.
