Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician to support various VA healthcare facilities in the region. This role requires a strong commitment to quality patient care, medication management, and adherence to VA standards and regulations.

Position Summary:

The Pharmacy Technician will assist pharmacists in dispensing medications, preparing compounded sterile products, and operating pharmacy automation systems. This position requires accuracy, efficiency, and strict adherence to safety and compliance protocols.

Work Schedule:

  • Pharmacy operates 24/7/365; schedules may vary based on staffing needs.

  • Work shifts range from 8-12 hours with a minimum 12-hour rest period between shifts.

  • Weekend and holiday coverage required.

Primary Responsibilities: Medication Preparation & Dispensing:
  • Prepare, package, label, and dispense prescription medications, including sterile compounded products.

  • Ensure correct dosages, drugs, and supplies are provided.

Inventory Management:
  • Maintain accurate medication inventories, rotate stock, check expiration dates, and replenish as needed.

  • Ensure proper storage and handling of all medications.

Pharmacy Automation Operations:
  • Operate automated systems such as Med Carousel, ScriptPro, Omnicell, and Pick Point.

  • Perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance.

Patient & Staff Communication:
  • Respond to inquiries from patients and healthcare professionals.

  • Document interactions in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).

Compliance & Documentation:
  • Maintain proper records of prescriptions and medication handling in accordance with federal regulations and VA policies.

  • Ensure safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Outpatient Pharmacy Duties:
  • Assemble prescriptions for dispensing and mail delivery.

  • Use barcode scanning for accuracy and manually complete non-automated prescriptions.

  • Verify patient identity using double identifiers and resolve delivery issues.

  • Support pharmacists with CMOP reject reports and medication reprocessing.

  • Monitor and manage admission and discharge medications.

Inpatient Pharmacy Duties:
  • Compound sterile products following USP 797/800 guidelines.

  • Interpret and prepare physician orders accurately, ensuring aseptic technique.

  • Inspect prepared medications and verify accuracy before pharmacist review.

  • Replenish emergency trays and operate unit dose systems.

  • Troubleshoot automated system issues and coordinate resolutions.

  • Manage inventory and address medication shortages with procurement teams.

Qualifications:
  • Certification: Certified Pharmacy Technician (PTCB).

  • Experience: Minimum 1 year in a hospital pharmacy, with IV compounding experience preferred.

  • Education: High school diploma/GED and completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program.

  • Skills:

    • Strong mathematical, typing, and computer skills.

    • Experience with pharmacy automation (e.g., Med Carousel, Omnicell) preferred.

    • Knowledge of hazardous materials handling and safety protocols.

    • Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

    • Ability to follow instructions and work in a dynamic healthcare setting.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand, sit, stoop, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods.

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move light to moderate objects as required for inventory management and medication handling.
