Job Description EarthCam is seeking a motivated and curious Junior Backend Developer to join our in-house development team. This role focuses on building and maintaining backend services and APIs that power our web applications—primarily using PHP (Laravel) —and supporting reliable data flows between systems. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, enjoys problem-solving, and takes pride in writing clean, maintainable code while collaborating closely with engineers, product, and UX teams. Responsibilities Develop and maintain backend features using PHP (Laravel) to support product and business needs Build and support RESTful APIs used by internal tools and customer-facing applications Work with databases (primarily MySQL ) to design schemas, write queries, and improve performance Implement validation, authentication/authorization, and secure data handling best practices Write clean, testable code; assist with debugging, bug fixes, and production support Collaborate with front-end developers to integrate APIs and ensure smooth end-to-end functionality Participate in code reviews and follow established development standards and processes Document backend endpoints, workflows, and technical decisions as needed Stay current with backend development best practices and Laravel/PHP improvements Who You Are Growth-minded with a desire to continuously expand backend and system design knowledge Comfortable working in a team environment and asking great questions Passionate, creative, and efficient problem solver Detail-oriented with a strong focus on reliability, security, and maintainability Able to communicate progress, blockers, and solutions clearly Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent experience) Hands-on experience with PHP and Laravel (coursework, projects, internships, or professional) Understanding of backend fundamentals: APIs, MVC patterns, authentication, data modeling Experience with relational databases such as MySQL (queries, indexing basics a plus) Familiarity with Git; Jira/Confluence experience is a plus Basic understanding of HTML/CSS/JavaScript is helpful for collaborating across the stack Strong written and verbal communication skills Takes pride in producing high-quality, maintainable work What We Offer At EarthCam, we believe great work starts with feeling supported, valued, and inspired.
