Duties

Welcome to the Sensor Science Division (SSD) in NIST's Physical Measurement Laboratory! Our Mission is to foster the next generation of SI-traceable dimensional, thermodynamic, and optical radiation measurements and their application by providing calibrations, standards, and innovations that improve U.
S.
industrial competitiveness and quality-of-life.


As a new Physicist on our team, you will:

  • Advance the state of the art in the measurements of thermodynamic quantities and provide support for American industry through measurement service.
  • Perform research independently and as a member of a team to improve the realization and dissemination of the SI unit of temperature, the kelvin.
  • Validate and improve measurements through comparisons with other national metrology laboratories and by other methodology.

Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirements

Basic Requirements:
  • Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

    OR

Combination of education and experience
  • - courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level.
Specialized Experience is defined as experience in thermodynamics and instrumentation with laboratory experience designing, developing, measuring, AND calibrating standard for thermodynamics quantities, specifically temperature.


OR

Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements.


OR

A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done.
We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
