The Opportunity
WSDOT I-405/SR 167 Program is currently seeking is seeking to fill multiple Plant Inspector/Tester positions to support our Renton Office. The I-405/SR 167 corridor is a multimodal transportation network that extends 40+ miles within three counties in the Puget Sound region. By joining this team, you would benefit from being part of a fully co-located, blended team with strong career growth opportunities as the I-405/SR 167 Program and its partners work to deliver over $2 billion in funded projects.

This position offers the successful candidate an opportunity to work on a very large-scale design-build projects. Our top candidate will be comfortable performing a variety of duties in accordance with WSDOT standards to support the delivery of multi-million-dollar design-build projects within the I-405/SR 167 corridors. These are in-training positions that offer a career path and on-the-job training, which allows you to progress upward through the Transportation Technician field and achieve the goal class level. As the Plant Inspector & Tester, these positions are responsible for performing project inspection, materials testing on concrete and asphalt. These positions are also responsible for performing a variety of construction and environmental engineering tasks for construction administration and monitoring environmental permit conditions in support of engineering projects and the construction office.

Note: This position includes an approved in-training plan; therefore, it may be filled at the Transportation Technician 1, 2 or 3 level depending on experience. The salaries for these classifications are as follows:

Transportation Technician 1: $45,599 - $61,009 annually depending on qualifications
Transportation Technician 2: $55,251 - $74,340 annually depending on qualifications
Transportation Technician 3: $62,596 - $84,117 annually depending on qualifications

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Plant Inspector/Tester will:


  • Perform materials tests such as embankment compaction testing, gradation for aggregates, making grout cubes, and other tests as required.
  • Collect samples and document results, completing paperwork for the material tests performed and samples collected.
  • Test and record materials in accordance with WSDOTs best practices for Design-Build and Design-Bid-Build projects.
  • Interpret highway construction plans, specifications, and special provisions and monitor the contractors work for one or more major aspects of a project.
  • Assist in all phases of structures inspection including checking foundations excavation, pile driving, position of reinforcing bars, checking placement of concrete into forms and backfill.
  • Complete inspector daily reports, force account sheets, and other required documentation.
  • Perform on-site inspections and provide oversight to the Design-Builder and contractor on environmental related construction activities to ensure that project activities are consistent with permit conditions, the contract, and environmental and legal regulations.

Qualifications
An ideal candidate for the Transportation Technician 1 position will have:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

An ideal candidate for the Transportation Technician 2 position will have:
  • An associate degree in civil engineering technology, surveying, drafting or other closely related field.
OR
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1 or equivalent.
OR
  • Three (3) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker or equivalent.

An ideal candidate for the Transportation Technician 3 position will have:
  • Two (2) years of experience performing semi-skilled technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent.
OR
  • Certification as an Engineer-in-Training
OR
  • A bachelors degree in engineering

In addition, the following are required at all Transportation Technician levels:
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Ability to transport up to 50 lbs.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Experience reading and interpreting environmental permits and conditions.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Knowledge of WSDOT materials documentation procedures and materials testing procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
