Would you like to be part of the team that supports critical wastewater, infrastructure for the largest county in Virginia?

Assists in monitoring equipment and/or treatment process station to ensure the proper treatment of wastewater at the Noman M. Cole Jr. pollution control plant, an advanced 67 mgd wastewater treatment facility, which is required by law to meet, on a continuous basis, stringent effluent limitations established by state and federal regulatory agencies.

Assists higher level plant operators in monitoring operations via computer, visual, and audio inspections. Collects samples of wastewater and sludge at prescribes stages and time intervals in the treatment cycle and performs basic tests. Monitors alarms and by-passes piece of equipment in case of an emergency.

Understands mechanical process and use of mechanical tools and instruments, maintains accurate logs and carries out applicable safety practices, cleans facilities such as, wet wells, tanks and other equipment and skims grease. Adjust chemical federates, adjust or replaces packing on pumps, gates and other controls and equipment. Performs general housekeeping and cleaning duties. Learns principles and operation of wastewater treatment has ability to learn the biological, chemical and physical processes of wastewater treatment.

  • Assists in corrective repairs and performs an ongoing preventative maintenance program of exercising and rotating various process equipment and machinery.
  • Works in team environment. Exchanges information with supervisor and co-workers
  • Communicates with previous operator at beginning of shift to determine problems and status of all equipment.
  • Operates plant equipment to ensure proper operating parameters and collects and composites samples for plant process testing and monitoring. Reads meters, cauges, and other instruments and records observations in operating log sheets and books.
  • Adjusts chemical feed rates, pump speeds, and other equipment to maintain optimum operating conditions, and accepts chemical deliveries in accordance with verbal and written instructions.
  • Makes frequent tours of his/ ser work area observing treatment systems, process equipment and initiates required corrective actions when needed.
  • Performs tests for Ph, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, settle ability of sludge, moisture content of sludge and other process control parameters.
  • Cleans process equipment, duty stations, and operating areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the biological, chemical, and physical processes of wastewater treatment;
  • General knowledge of appropriate operational responses to emergency situations;

  • Working knowledge of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems (SCADA), Computerized Maintenance Systems (CMMS) and Enterprise Asset Management systems (EAM);
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices;
  • Ability to evaluate operational process performance and to select appropriate actions;
  • Ability to understand mechanical processes and use mechanical tools and instruments;
  • Ability to write accurate reports and maintain accurate records;

  • Ability to instruct and explain wastewater treatment processes to lower level operators;

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or a GED issued by a state department of education and one year of experience as an operator in a Class I wastewater facility or higher.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • A valid driver's license.
  • A Class III Wastewater Treatment Operator's certification issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia within 12 months of hire.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Appointees within this classification are subject to a criminal background check, driving record check and pre-employment physical prior to employment.

Positions within this classification are considered essential to the maintenance and continuity of core county operations during the activation of an emergency or critical incident.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
May be exposed to raw waste.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience in an industrial setting and/or wastewater treatment plant.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good mathematical skills.
  • Must be able to enter permitted confined spaces using an OSHA-certified non-entry retrieval system, which includes a safety harness with a weight restriction of 310 pounds.
  • Three years or more experience as a Plant Operator.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to left 50 to 75 lbs. in a safe manner. Must be able to bend, stoop, climb stairs and climb up and down 40-foot ladder. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to raw waste. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include exercise.
