Position Description Performs specialized post-doctoral work in the planning, conducting and/or supervision of original research. Responsible for participating in a research project associated with Ph.D. studies and the interpretation of the results of publication. Work is performed under supervision of graduate faculty members with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of the project. May supervise research and student assistants. Major/Essential Functions Design, plan, and conduct independent and collaborative experiments Analyze and interpret complex datasets Prepare manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations for peer-reviewed publication and scientific meetings Critically read, evaluate, and synthesize scientific literature Assist in the training and mentoring of graduate students, technicians, and trainees Demonstrate strong interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills Exhibit excellent written and oral scientific communication Perform rodent handling, habituation, health monitoring, and husbandry in compliance with IACUC guidelines Conduct survival and non-survival surgical procedures, including: Sciatic nerve and spinal cord surgeries, abdominal and visceral procedures, neuropathic and inflammatory pain models Perform injections via multiple routes, including: Intraperitoneal, intravenous, intranasal, intracranial, intrathecal, intra-plantar Perform euthanasia, perfusion, and high-quality tissue dissection of: brain, spinal cord, DRG, CSF, blood, pancreas, spleen, liver, and lung Behavioral Neuroscience & Phenotyping: Conduct behavioral testing using AnyMaze video tracking software, including: Open Field Test (locomotion/anxiety), Y-Maze (working memory), Novel Object Recognition, Contextual and Cued Fear Conditioning Perform nociceptive and affective pain assays, including: von Frey filament testing, Hargreaves test, Muscle Withdrawal Threshold, Mouse Grimace Scale, Marble burying test, Thermal preference testing Conduct metabolic and physiological phenotyping, including: Comprehensive Lab Animal Monitoring System (CLAMS®) metabolic cages and EchoMRI-700™ whole-body composition analysis Perform electrophysiological and analytical techniques, including: Patch-clamp electrophysiology and LC-MS/MS analysis Analyze behavioral and physiological data, including data cleaning, statistical analysis, and heat-map generation Prepare tissue homogenates and isolated cell populations (e.g., microglia, neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages, DRG neurons) for transcriptomic analyses Perform molecular and metabolic assays, including: ELISA, Western blotting, qPCR, Seahorse XF Cell Mito Stress Test, Multiplex cytokine/chemokine profiling, Immunofluorescence (Leica and/or Keyence) and Immunohistochemistry (IHC), High-parameter flow cytometry (BD FACSAria cell sorter) Additional Responsibilities: Contribute to collaborative grant development Support laboratory operations and compliance Perform other duties as assigned Required Qualifications Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., D.Sc., M.D.) in area of project specialization. Knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources, and standards thereof. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions and other outcomes. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to plan and allocate the workload of employees, providing direct training and supervision as needed. In accordance with Texas Executive Order GA-48 and applicable state or federal law, this position may involve access to, work on, or conduct research involving critical infrastructure. It will require background checks, including, but not limited to, criminal history and other security-related screenings. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of these checks. Preferred Qualifications Having earned a Ph.D., Pharm.D./Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D. in pharmacology, neuroscience, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, pain neurobiology, or a related biomedical discipline within the last preceding 5 years, or have earned upon start date as determined by hiring faculty. Documented record of experience in animal models and In Vivo techniques, specifically in brain, spinal, DRG, CSF, blood, pancreas, spleen, liver, and lung tissue dissection; behavior neuroscience and phenotyping; molecular and cellular assays.
