Pure DB Administrators are not suitable for this position.Role Overview We are seeking an experienced PostgreSQL Database Specialist with 6–8 years of industry experience to design, optimize, secure, and maintain PostgreSQL databases that support mission‑critical applications. The ideal candidate brings strong hands‑on PostgreSQL expertise, performance tuning skills, and experience working in cloud and enterprise environments. Collaboration with engineering, SRE, and application teams is essential.Key ResponsibilitiesDatabase Design & ArchitectureDesign scalable schemas, tables, indexes, views, and triggers.Align database models with application and business requirements.Utilize PostgreSQL features such as JSON/JSONB, window functions, partitioning, and extensions.Performance OptimizationMonitor and tune database performance using PostgreSQL native tools and APM platforms.Optimize SQL queries, indexing strategies, and execution plans (EXPLAIN).Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.Maintenance & AutomationAutomate maintenance tasks: backups, vacuuming, indexing, monitoring (pg_cron, Ansible, cloud schedulers).Support replication, clustering, and high‑availability deployments.Manage patching, version upgrades, and lifecycle activities.Security & Access ControlImplement role‑based access controls, encryption, and database security standards.Ensure compliance with internal security and data governance protocols.Manage user access, permissions, and audit logs.Backup & RecoveryConfigure automated backups and PITR (Point‑in‑Time Recovery).Validate backup integrity and conduct scheduled recovery tests.Troubleshooting & SupportTroubleshoot production and non‑production database issues.Provide best‑practice guidance to developers and SRE teams.Maintain documentation for procedures, configs, and incident handling.Collaboration & Continuous ImprovementSupport CI/CD and DevOps workflows involving database components.Participate in performance testing, capacity planning, and architectural reviews.Stay current with PostgreSQL advancements and contribute to tooling/process improvements.Required Experience & SkillsTechnical Skills6–8 years total experience, with 3–5 years hands‑on PostgreSQL experience in enterprise environments.Strong SQL, data modeling, and query tuning skills.Familiarity with monitoring tools (pg_stat_statements, pgAdmin, APM tools).Knowledge of HA, replication, clustering, backups, and DR strategies.Experience with automation (Ansible, Terraform, pg_cron).Experience with cloud DB platforms (AWS RDS, Azure PostgreSQL).Scripting ability in Python or Bash.Soft SkillsStrong analytical and problem‑solving capabilities.Excellent communication and documentation skills.Ability to collaborate across engineering and platform teams.Highly detail‑oriented with strong focus on data reliability.Continuous learning mindset.Preferred SkillsPartitioning, logical replication, PostGIS.CI/CD and DevOps exposure.Docker/Kubernetes familiarity.PostgreSQL or cloud certifications.How you will growAt Deloitte, our professional development plan focuses on helping people at every level of their career to identify and use their strengths to do their best work every day.
