JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary:

The Preconstruction Engineer’s (PCE) role is to assist the Director of Preconstruction, Project Executive, and other operations staff members with preconstruction pursuits from drywall, ceiling, millwork, and other carpentry related budgets. PCE will primarily be responsible for reviewing contract drawings and bid documents in Quick Bid/OST takeoff and budget software (i.e. Quick Bid/OST). The Preconstruction Engineer also performs scope verification, analyzing, and leveling quotes from vendors and subcontractors, reviews approval submittals and updates budgets accordingly.

Essential Functions:

Review contract documents and verify takeoff / scope accuracy being turned over from estimating department.

Obtain material information including lead times and sizing options.

Review contract documents and specifications; verify scope items have appropriate costs.

Prepare list of necessary samples based on scope; order samples; place sample tickets with the shop.

Organize digital preconstruction project folder, document the organization system.

Work with the engineering department on value engineering options on constructability and materials.

Review man-days and productions and compare them to budgets.

Research and development of cost savings on projects prior to turning the project over to the operations team.

Present plans to the operations department, shop and field, outlining how to obtain maximum percent return

Research new vendors and products.

Enter PC budgets into project software (i.e. Plexxis)

Utilize takeoff software to distribute the job details from estimating to the preconstruction team.

Use bid drawings to build preconstruction budget.

Identify and solicit the appropriate subcontractors for various preconstruction pursuits and ensure adequate subcontractor coverage in each scope of work.

Communicate with subcontractors regarding involvement / interest in preconstruction pursuits and diligently follow up to review project scope and pricing.

Review specifications and prepare appropriate submittals for scope of work for cabinet hardware, LEED, FSC, etc.

Prepare and distribute complete bid packages for subcontractors and vendors to provide quotations, follow up to completion.

Draft new details as requested.

Competencies:

Precon standards and procedures

Ability to manage competing priorities

Ability to maintain organization of file system

General knowledge of millwork materials, practices, systems, market conditions and assemblies

Excellent attention to detail

Onscreen and Quickbid software for digital takeoff a must

Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel

Microsoft Project scheduling software a plus

Subcontractor/Vendor bid pricing review and comprehension

AUTO-CAD/Sketchup a plus

Experience in accounting or billing is not required but a plus

Work Environment and Physical Demands: This position operates in a professional office environment and is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc. e.g. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; to carry work and use controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; communicate. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 20 lbsSpecific vision abilities required by the employee include color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, etc.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This position is full time and the expected hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Additional hours, although not the norm, may be required.

Required Education and Experience:

BS in Construction Management or related engineering discipline preferred.

1-3 years of Estimating, Project Management, or Field experience preferred.

Experience and knowledge of millwork fabrication and installation.
