BASIC FUNCTIONS:
The Principal Consultant is responsible for the functioning of the Committee, including providing guidance, leadership and counsel to the Chair and members of the Committee and other members of the Senate. Applicants must have significant experience in Californias legislative process and broad legal knowledge of areas within the Committees jurisdiction.

The successful applicant must be able to work under tight deadlines, have the flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed and have the ability to succeed in a fast-paced and high-pressure work environment.

DUTIES:
The Principal Consultant must have broad knowledge of areas within the Committees jurisdiction, including water and natural resources policy. In addition, the Principal Consultant must have a working knowledge of Californias legislative system and budget process. The Principal Consultant must have the ability to build and foster relationships with elected officials and their staff, as well as other entities, including the Executive Branch and advocacy organizations. The Principal Consultant must be able to provide clear guidance and leadership concerning complex issues and have excellent negotiation skills and an ability to succeed in a fast-paced and high-pressure work environment. Finally, the Principal Consultant must be flexible to work nights and weekends as needed to fulfill the job requirements.

Additionally, in the Natural Resources and Water Committee, all consultants, including the Principal Consultant, edit analyses, prepare and edit publications, and manage informational and oversight hearings.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
A bachelors degree is required. Masters degree is preferred. Please include verification of your degree with your completed application.

Significant legislative experience, at least six years preferable.

If you are offered this position and you are vaccinated (for COVID-19), you will be required to submit a copy of your COVID vaccination card with your new hire paperwork.

LOCATION, SALARY AND FILING DATE:
This position is located in Sacramento, CA.
Final salary will be commensurate with experience and education. Seniority and significant experience are required to reach the higher end of the salary range.
