Summary: The Principal Engineer may work from any of our four offices in Nevada or Utah. The Principal Engineer takes the lead in planning, designing, and directing geotechnical engineering or construction testing/inspection on simple to complex projects by performing the following duties. Expectations include using education, intelligence, and common sense to resolve problems and tasks that are assigned. Essential Functions: Prepares and monitors project budgets. Has overall responsibility for the profitability of his/her projects. Responsible for project schedules and timely completion of projects. Serves as a project manager or project engineer on complex projects. Actively participate in a professional society/association (ie. board member) Supervises and monitors client relationship strategies. Coordinates and approves pricing, estimating, scoping and marketing strategies for proposed projects. Develops engineering agreements for his/her projects within the program. Prepares forecast of workload for assigned staff. Attends client meetings – days or nights. Responsible for control of work-in-process, ensures accurate client billings, and monitors outstanding accounts receivable and collection efforts on his projects. Directs and supervises other engineer’s activities – may perform duties of a supervisor or Geotechnical Practice Leader. Analyzes reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, tests, and aerial photographs on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and other topographical and geologic data to plan and design projects. Mentors and trains engineering staff, as necessary. Prepares or directs preparation and modifies reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental impact studies, and designs for project. Instructs draftspersons / technicians to prepare working drawings. Visits construction site to monitor progress and other duties per the contract documents. Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents. Manages significant marketing responsibilities with clients to obtain work for the firm. Responsible for project manager and/or project team quality system tasks as defined in the quality manual. Plans, schedules or coordinates the preparation of engineering documents or activities for multiple major projects. Develops new techniques and/or improved processes, material or products. Serves as the technical specialist for the organization in the application of advanced concepts, principles and methods in an assigned area. Keeps informed of new developments and requirements affecting the organization for the purpose of recommending changes in programs or applications. Interprets, organizes, executes and coordinates assignments. Routinely interacts with clients, customers, officials, contractors and others. Leads project meetings and makes presentations. Represents the organization and maintains liaison with individuals and related organizations. Perform other duties as assigned Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Master’s degree encouraged) from an accredited four-year college or university and a minimum 10 years relevant experience or the equivalent thereof. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, trigonometry and financial functions. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Registered professional civil engineer in the State of Nevada (applicants for the St. George office may hold a Utah PE license; however, obtaining a Nevada PE license through reciprocity may be required.) Valid driver’s license Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
