About the role
Our Commercial and Legal team are looking for a Principal Lawyer with a strong background in Freedom of Information (FOI) and public law to join their team. The Principal Lawyer (Public Law) will have the responsibility of overseeing and coordinating FOI and public law-related regulatory matters. They will also offer expert guidance and strategic advice on a wide range of complex legal matters.
On a day-to-day basis, you will find yourself:
- Handling public law matters related to LXRP including privacy concerns, administrative law matters, and governmental investigations/reviews.
- Handling FOI matters relating to LXRP including determining responses to FOI requests.
- Building relationships with internal and external LXRP stakeholders.
- Overseeing and managing LXRP's interactions with external regulatory bodies, including addressing inquiries and related matters from the Victorian Ombudsman, Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Victorian Auditor General's Office, Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner and the Local Jobs First Commissioner.
This is a 3-year fixed term position, paying a salary between $130,673 to $174,869 + superannuation. At LXRP we have a hybrid working policy where you can work a mix of home and office. Office anchor days to collaborate and bond together will be confirmed upon successful application.
About you
You're a legal specialist, with experience in the field of FOI and public law. You take pride in providing high quality legal advice on matters pertaining to FOI, privacy and public within a government environment. You enjoy tackling problems and have an active curiosity when it comes to conducting researching, gathering information and providing advice.
Lets get technical what skills do we expect you to have?
- Admitted, or eligible to be admitted, as a legal practitioner to the Supreme Court of Victoria (or similar).
- Demonstrated experience utilising relevant legislation such as the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Vic), and in-depth knowledge of FOI law, procedure and Victorian Government FOI policy.
- Experience in providing legal advice on complex issues relating to public law matters, including statutory interpretation, administrative law, regulatory investigations and audits and civil litigations.
- Ability to plan, prioritise and be adaptable things change here at LXRP all the time, which keeps things exciting but also means that you may need to re-prioritise from time to time at short notice.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
