Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Project Engineer is responsible for providing technical engineering support and project coordination for civil engineering and site development projects. This role combines technical expertise in CAD drafting and design with hands-on project execution capabilities including site inspections, quality control, and field coordination. The Project Engineer works closely with project managers, design teams, contractors, and clients to ensure successful project delivery on time, within budget, and to specification.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Engineering Design & Drafting
• Prepare detailed civil engineering plans, specifications, and calculations using AutoCAD and Civil 3D software
• Develop site grading plans, utility layouts, drainage designs, and roadway alignments
• Create construction drawings including plan views, profiles, cross-sections, and details
• Perform design calculations for earthwork volumes, storm water management, and hydraulic systems
• Coordinate with surveyors to incorporate topographic data and boundary information into design files
• Maintain design standards, drawing templates, and CAD library components
Project Coordination & Management
• Support project managers in planning, scheduling, and executing civil engineering projects
• Review and interpret construction documents, specifications, and contracts
• Coordinate with architects, consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies
• Prepare and submit permit applications and respond to agency review comments
• Monitor project budgets, schedules, and resource allocation
• Maintain project documentation, correspondence, and filing systems
Site Inspections & Field Services
• Conduct regular site inspections to verify construction conformance with approved plans and specifications
• Document site conditions through field notes, photographs, and inspection reports
• Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, and requests for information (RFIs)
• Coordinate with contractors to resolve field issues and provide technical clarifications
• Verify as-built conditions and prepare record drawings documenting final construction
• Conduct quality control inspections for grading, drainage, utilities, and paving work
Quality Assurance & Compliance
• Ensure all design work complies with applicable codes, standards, and regulations
• Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, and constructability
• Identify and communicate potential risks, conflicts, or design issues
• Participate in safety reviews and ensure job site safety protocols are followed
• Support preparation of close-out documentation and warranty materials
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related engineering discipline
Experience
• 2-5 years of experience in civil engineering design, construction, or project engineering
• Demonstrated proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D software
• Experience with site development projects including grading, drainage, utilities, and roadways
Technical Skills
• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D for 2D and 3D design
• Strong understanding of civil engineering principles, grading, drainage design, and hydraulics
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents
• Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements for site development
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
• Experience with project management software (e.g., Procore, Bluebeam, or similar)

Other Requirements
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for site visits
• Ability to work in outdoor construction environments and conduct field inspections
• OSHA 10 or 30-hour safety certification preferred
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI) certification
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or actively pursuing licensure
• Experience with land development, municipal infrastructure, or transportation projects
• Knowledge of stormwater management design and BMP implementation
• Familiarity with GIS software and surveying principles
• Experience with 3D modeling and Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies
• LEED AP or other sustainability certifications
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to sit for extended periods while performing computer-based design work
• Capability to walk construction sites over uneven terrain in various weather conditions
• Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and access confined spaces as needed for inspections
• Capacity to lift and carry equipment or materials up to 25 pounds occasionally
Visual acuity sufficient to review detailed engineering drawings and site conditions
