JOB DESCRIPTION:

Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA), an internationally recognized environmental research and advocacy nonprofit based in Boston, MA, seeks an Advocacy Director to join our interdisciplinary team.

The Advocacy Director oversees all aspects of our advocacy initiatives, with the goal of improving environmental policies and outcomes across the watershed and beyond. In furtherance of CRWAs policy agenda, the Advocacy Director will work primarily at the local and state levels to build coalitions, partner with traditional and nontraditional allies, advance legislative priorities, strengthen environmental laws and regulations, and hold polluters and government agencies accountable. The Advocacy Director oversees a small team including a legal advocate, communications associate, and community organizers. CRWAs advocacy efforts are directly informed by our science and data-based programmatic work, necessitating close coordination between these areas of the organization.


RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage all aspects of CRWAs advocacy work, in close collaboration with other senior staff, particularly the Executive Director
  • Supervise team of 3-4 advocacy, communications, and outreach staff
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, and Program Managers, establish CRWAs advocacy agenda
  • Develop and implement strategies to advocate for CRWAs policy priorities before local and state governmental bodies, as well as the general public
  • Improve environmental outcomes across the watershed
  • Engage and work in close coordination with traditional and nontraditional allies; build and support coalitions; serve on task forces and other advisory bodies
  • Budgeting, fundraising, and strategic planning for CRWAs advocacy work
  • Ensure that CRWAs advocacy work effectively integrates climate equity and environmental justice
  • As necessary, support litigation to advance CRWAs mission
  • Grant applications and grant management, support fundraising efforts


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced degree preferred in law, public policy, or public administration
  • At least 10 years experience in environmental advocacy, including state-level lobbying and administrative processes around regulation, permitting, and other government decision-making
  • Political or grassroots campaign experience is a plus
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory frameworks applicable to water quality, water management, and stormwater management
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to develop new ideas and initiatives to address some of the most challenging issues facing rivers and watersheds; manage teams and supervise staff; and work collaboratively across an organization
  • Demonstrated high level of professionalism
  • Commitment to CRWAs mission
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google GSuite
  • Able to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed
  • Multilingual is a plus
