Responsibilities

The Research Scientist must play a key supporting role in the sponsoring research program.
Will significantly contribute to grant writing and serve as co-principal investigator (if necessary) on extramural grant applications submitted by the principal investigator.
May apply as the co-investigator or co-principal investigator with other investigators or principal investigator for an extramural grant or contracts if done in collaboration with his/her Mayo sponsor.
The Research Scientist is expected to serve as the principal investigator's internal and external representative and resource contact person for the research program and may represent the principal investigator at national or international meetings if necessary.
Brings a unique skill, technique or knowledge to the program and will significantly participate in personnel and resource management on behalf of the principal investigator.
Will independently manage assigned projects and the projects of other program personnel.
Will provide input for the direction and design of other's projects and direct teaching activities within the investigator's program.


The newly established Multi-Omics Mass Spectrometry Core seeks candidates for a Proteomics Mass Spectrometry Specialist at the level of Research Scientist, with the ability to perform common mass spectrometry related research methods, including sample preparation, instrument method development and implementation, and delivery of data analyses.
This enterprise-wide core is located on the Florida campus and will initially provide mass spectrometry-based proteomic services, with plans for future expansion of lipidomic and metabolomic services.


It will be the candidate’s responsibility to perform mass spectrometry sample preparation, instrument maintenance and data analysis:

1) Work with core director on consulting with users to advise on the project design

2) Perform sample preparation for mass spectrometry analysis, with an initial focus on proteomics.

3) Maintain core laboratory space, track inventory, and order supplies.

4) Perform maintenance and method optimization and develop and maintain standard operating procedures and protocols for the core.

5) Utilize bioinformatics tools to analyze results, distribute data to submitting researchers, and provide help with troubleshooting as necessary.

6) Work closely with the Director to meet the demands of the core.

7) Track instrument usage and assist Director in developing reports to OCSS advisory committee and central administration.


The new Multi-Omics Mass Spectrometry Core will provide Mayo Clinic translational and discovery scientists with access to sophisticated and customizable mass spectrometry-based testing at single cell sensitivity that will facilitate deeper understanding of diseases at the molecular level, will aid in the discovery of new therapeutic targets and biomarkers, and will support development of personalized treatment strategies.
The initial emphasis of the core will be on proteomic analyses, but the ultimate goal of the core is to provide mass spectrometry-based platforms for a true multi-omics approach that covers proteomics, metabolomics, and lipidomics.


Qualifications

A Research Scientist candidate must have a doctoral level degree and a minimum of 6 years of postdoctoral research training at Mayo or elsewhere.
Must hold academic rank (i.
e.
Instructor, Assistant Professor) at Mayo at the time of accepting the Research Scientist position or achieve it immediately thereafter.
The candidate must bring a unique skill, technique or knowledge to the sponsoring program as documented by professional accomplishments and publication record and will have made a career decision to pursue regular employment at Mayo in support of an established research staff program.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.
D.
with current knowledge in mass spectrometry, proteomics, and bioinformatics, and experience performing LC-MS/MS based proteomic analyses (ideally on Bruker timsTOF) and pertinent data analysis software.
Additional expertise in spatial and single cell proteomics, as well as other mass spectrometry techniques is a plus.
The successful applicant will need to be able to take initiative, and quickly assimilate new techniques and concepts.
Good interpersonal skills are important to facilitate interactions with investigators from diverse scientific fields.
