Harnett County Health Department through the Health Education Division is seeking a Public Health Education Specialist. The Public Health Education Specialist is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating public health programs and initiatives for the Harnett County community. The Public Health Education Specialist will use appropriate strategies, and methods to facilitate health promotion and disease prevention. Duties also include gathering, entering and analyzing data, which require proficiency in computer skills. Work within this position requires an employee to demonstrate strong writing skills and public speaking abilities in addition to excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The Public Health Educator must have thorough understanding of the diverse populations served by Harnett County Health Department. Hiring Range: Minimum $49,177.00 to Job Rate $57,169.00 An employee within this class will inform, educate, and empower the public about health issues through planning programs that are consistent with the goals and objectives for areas of responsibility, which are primarily education and outreach to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV. Plans, organizes and conducts comprehensive health education services in the area of assignment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community organizations and the public. Position may be involved in the grant writing for the areas of responsibility. Ensures that health education activities are documented and reported appropriately. Utilizes evidence-based strategies to support and improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities. This position requires an employee to be creative, organized and detail oriented. Education and Experience Graduation from a four year college or university with a major in health education; or graduation from a four year college or university with one year experience in public health education; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred, but not required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of the functions of community health agencies. General knowledge of methods and techniques used in preparing and disseminating educational information to the public. General knowledge of the techniques involved in preparing and displaying posters, exhibits and other educational visual aids. Ability to present ideas effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, community organizations, and the general public. Successful completion of a drug screening and criminal background check will be required as a condition of employment.
