Would you like to make a difference in your community? Come join our team of Public Health Nurses! The Western Tidewater Health District is seeking a highly motivated Registered Nurse to join a team of professionals committed to providing public health services in the Suffolk Health Department. While this position will be based in the Suffolk clinic, which is the highest volume clinic within the Western Tidewater District, the selected candidate will perform duties as needed in the Isle of Wight clinic. This Public Health Nurse will provide clinical services in multiple nursing programs to include Family Planning, STI, immunization and Communicable disease and will perform direct nursing services by independently providing professional nursing care to patients in clinics. Other duties include nursing assessments, lab tests, takes measurements, develops and implements care plans, administers medication, case management and participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code. May supervise support staff.
The Western Tidewater Health District services the City of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, City of Franklin, Southampton County, and Pughsville.
VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications
obtain RN license within 90 days of the date of hire or subject to termination per the
regulations governing the practice of nursing. Requires BLS certification. Requires
adherence to all safety policies including a review of immunizations, driver safety
policies, and all other state policies
- Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
- Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
- Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
- Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
- May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
- Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR
Additional Considerations
Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
Experience working with children and adults in outpatient settings
Family planning, immunization and sexually transmitted infection clinical experience
Experience with TB management
