Job Duties

The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking an Office Support Specialist to work with the Public Safety Department to provide dispatch services and support.

This is a part-time, wage position without benefits. Working hours are limited to 1500 hours per year.
Working hours are 7:00am 2:00pm, Monday through Thursday or 2:00 PM 9:00 PM Monday through Thursday.

Responsibilities include:
  • Responsible for receiving calls/texts for service and communicating with appropriate emergency or service personnel by radio.
  • Receive complaint, emergency, service and information calls/texts and communicate requests to Public Safety personnel as necessary.
  • Record information within computer aided dispatch software (CAD).
  • Relay information and requests from and to on duty officers, and other emergency service providers as necessary or required.
  • Monitor fire alarms and notify appropriate personnel.
  • Monitor CCTV and notify appropriate personnel to incidents.
  • Monitor and activate crisis alarms/emergency mass notification system.
  • Provide information and assistance to the general public, staff, students, and department personnel.
  • Document and contact Facilities Management to report emergency maintenance problems.
  • Directs citizens' inquiries and non-emergency calls/texts to the appropriate personnel.
  • Check visitors/contractors in and out as necessary.
  • Performs clerical duties as assigned.
  • Performs duties under the direction of the Campus Security Sergeant.
  • Perform other duties, responsibilities, and/or tasks as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate
  • Certification in the National Incident Management System (NIMS) to levels required by the Crisis Management Plan. Candidates who do not hold this certification must satisfy this requirement within 180 days of employment.
  • Valid Virginia drivers license at the time of appointment (applicants with six demerits or more are ineligible).
  • Must possess a current certification in both adult and child First Aid and CPR or agree to obtain certification following school policy.
  • Prefer one year experience in a customer service environment.
  • Prefer strong data entry skills.


Additional Considerations

Physical requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time

Note: A criminal history check will be required for final candidates.
