Starting pay $20-$23 per hour depending on experience


Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair railroad freight cars in a timely manner in accordance with RRVW, American Association of Railroads (AAR), and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards.

Principle Accountabilities:

Conduct inspections of rolling stock (freight cars, flat cars, tank cars, etc.). Inspect rolling stock for defects or evidence of wear, inspect rolling stock for compliance with industry standards, inspect lading for shifted loads, clearances, and compliance with rules; inspect rolling stock damaged in derailments and collisions; conduct pre-trip inspections (air brake tests, fuel, etc.).

Work with shop equipment and tools. Safely and effectively operate the following: acetylene torches, non-power tools (pliers, wrenches, hammers, etc.), power tools (drills, power saws, grinders, etc.), electric and gas welding equipment. Operate forklifts and scissor lifts.

Perform scheduled and on-demand maintenance. Perform initial terminal air brake tests and other pre-trip maintenance, clean and prepare surfaces for painting.

To coordinate proper movement of bad order cars.

Assist as required with derailments and clean-up requirements.

Coordinate with supervisor, material inventory levels.

Maintain a clean and safe shop and yard environment.

Perform all preventative maintenance work & repairs on trucks, underframe, structure, safety appliances, braking systems, draft systems and any associated tests.

Perform all work associated with rush repairs, road work and supplementary service operation of equipment.

Remove and replace defective appliances and components on rolling stock (trucks, shoes, coupler assemblies, air brake systems, etc.). Repair and application of all associated piping & valves, guards, shrouds, covers and any cutting, burning, welding, grinding, soldiering and brazing associated with removal or application of components.

Repair rolling stock structural components. Fabricate, cut, and perform rough finish operations on variety of metal replacement parts, fasten and assemble car parts by riveting, bolting, welding and other methods.

Must be able to handle emergency situations; including operating fire extinguishers as well as being able to apply first aid techniques.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Proof of High School Graduation of a General Equivalency Diploma.
  • Must have previous safe work record.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license and must be insurable to drive company vehicles.
  • Must be able to pass required examinations, read and understand safety instructions.
  • Experience and/or training in the use of heavy power tools, welders and equipment. Prefer certified welder.
  • Knowledge or AAR and FRA rules and regulations in connection with inspections, testing & repair and re-billing of freight cars and safety rules is preferred.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work weekends and shift work.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen and physical exam.
  • General computer knowledge is preferred.

AWS certified is preferred.

Must have a strong work ethic and desire to be part of a team that takes pride in our safety, quality, and treatment of customers. Must be knowledgeable of operation of various power tools. Ability to frequently climb up and down ladders along with frequent lifting, pushing, and pulling. Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable to drive company vehicles. Must be 18 years of age or older. Employment is subject to pre-employment physical, drug test, and background check.

Hours

Evening shift. Normal schedule is four (4,) days per week with some weekend, night and holiday work as required. On call as needed. Good attendance mandatory.
