SurmodicsST, Inc. (formerly Biocoat) is committed to providing the best in developing, manufacturing, and applying coatings on medical devices.  We are looking for a Research and Development Engineer II to support product formulation, process development, and material evaluation for coatings technologies. This role will conduct analytical testing and interpret results to advance next-generation coating solutions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop innovative approaches for applying coatings to complex substrates in alignment with specifications and customer requirements
  • Select, prepare, and formulate new coating solutions
  • Lead technical investigations to troubleshoot process issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions
  • Operate, maintain, and enhance processing equipment including coatings machine and friction testers
  • Train team members on processes, equipment, and best practices
  • Prepare coating procedures, technical reports, and work instructions
  • Document hazard analysis for new raw materials and chemical processes
  • Collaborate with cross-functional, global teams on coatings system development

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or any other related discipline with preferably 3-7 years industrial experience in a laboratory setting, medical devices or coatings.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to deliver accurate, high-quality work under tight deadlines
  • Proficient in laboratory techniques and analytical testing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid understanding of chemical process hazards

Work Environment:
Office and laboratory environments with occasional manufacturing and warehouse area exposure.  Physical requirements are those that could be reasonably anticipated given the job duties and work environment.  Travel limited to 5% between office locations. Exposure to hazardous chemicals in certain areas of the office.  Must wear required personal protective equipment while demonstrating safe working practices.

Physical Requirements
Physical Demands-Stooping, turning, bending, squatting, kneeling and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds; constant/repetitive standing; requires normal, correctable vision and hearing, and the ability to accurately discern color as necessary to perform job functions.
