JOB DESCRIPTION:

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

The Eric Taylor, PhD, Lab in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, Carver College of Medicine, at the University of Iowa, is pleased to announce an open research assistant position. The Taylor Lab utilizes metabolomic and molecular genetic approaches to solve biological problems. We have extra interest in problems related to diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative metabolism. We publish in top journals and prioritize staff and trainee professional development. The successful candidate will assist with and lead the design and execution of experiments investigating the mechanistic role of cellular, organ-level, and whole-body metabolism in health and disease.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Efficiently plan, manage, and conduct daily activities to meet scientific and professional objectives.
  • Design and conduct research studies in molecular biology and cellular biology.
  • Perform animal (mouse) husbandry, genotyping, and organization of the Taylor lab mouse colony.
  • Perform molecular cloning and mammalian cell culture.
  • Perform basic analysis and interpretation of experimentally generated data.
  • Prepare data for publication and grant proposals.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills and documentation in a research laboratory setting.
  • Assist with procurement of supplies and materials.
  • Other responsibilities at the discretion of the PI.

Percent of Time: 100%

Pay Grade: 3A

  • General supervision is received from Dr. Eric Taylor.

Supervision Exercised

  • Functional supervision may be exercised over laboratory students.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, chemistry, or related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • The candidate is required to have:
    • Experience working in a research laboratory.
    • Experience working with laboratory animals.
    • Experience with molecular biology lab techniques.
    • Experience with Microsoft Excel or other data analysis software.
    • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
    • Strong problem-solving skills.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Strong time management skills and ability to coordinate efficient completion of different responsibilities.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in laboratory management with supervisory experience.
  • Experience with animal husbandry and animal colony maintenance.
  • Experience with bacterial and mammalian cell culture.
  • Experience in DNA subcloning and the in-silico design and construction of expression vectors.
  • Proficiency with in-silico DNA manipulation software like Snap-Gene.
  • Experience in tissue culture techniques and use of CRISPR/Cas9 systems.
  • Knowledge of University of Iowa policies and procedures.
