We are seeking experienced and highly motivated Research Engineers to join our R&D team in Londonderry, NH. Position opens for Junior to Senior level commensurate with experience. Area: Londonderry - NH In Outokumpu’s EvoMaterials Team, we aim to leverage the best available avenues in both state of the art technologies and emerging disruptive innovations to establish a new paradigm in environmentally sustainable and geopolitically secure metals production. Our scientific and engineering efforts are experimentally focused on inventing and validating innovative technical solutions for critical materials production and deep decarbonization via extractive and chemical metallurgy. We are seeking decidedly motivated and highly creative scientists and engineers with a passion for hands on problem solving. We are hiring multiple Research Engineer positions at levels commensurate with qualifications and experience to work at our new pilot plant facility in Southern New Hampshire. Together, we will collaboratively address challenges in technology development for ferroalloy and stainless steel manufacturing. As a member of our Team, you will be key part of our effort to design, demonstrate, and implement new mineral treatment and metal smelting processes for a range of materials and applications at the pilot plant scale. Required Qualifications Junior levels: BSc/MS from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience in one of the following areas: Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry, or a closely related field Senior levels: PhD from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience in one of the following areas: Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry, or a closely related field Strong theoretical background in chemical thermodynamics, kinetics, mass transport, and inorganic materials chemistry Hands‑on experience with high temperature materials processing in a laboratory or industrial setting Expertise in the design, execution, and analysis of pyrometallurgical, solid‑gas reaction, or melt experiments Proficiency in data analysis and documentation Creativity and a strong desire to innovate in the metals industry We desire candidates with a cross section of these skills Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills Familiarity with the chemistry of slags, mattes, and liquid metals Familiarity with current processing pathways for major metal products, including chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and copper Experience with gas handling, acid gas scrubbing, and inert atmosphere processing Proficiency in thermodynamic calculations for chemical metallurgy applications, preferably using FactSage or similar modelling software Fabrication using milling machines, lathes, or similar equipment Experience in machining refractory materials Data analysis using MATLAB, python, or similar software Furnace operation, care, and maintenance Scrubber care and maintenance Your role would include Evaluating pathways and conditions to decarbonize ferroalloy and stainless steel manufacturing across mineral processing, metal smelting, and product refining operations Preparing mineral and metal samples for experimental testing at the pilot scale Designing and supporting operation of high temperature pyrometallurgical and melt‑based experiments for a range of processing conditions and chemistries at the pilot scale Characterizing mineral and metallic products via appropriate analytical methods and interpreting results Analyzing thermodynamic, kinetic, mass transport, and chemical metallurgical phenomena to inform process operation scalability Calculating mass and energy balances to evaluate the competitiveness of newly identified sustainable metals processes Communicating your results with members of the EvoMaterials Team and to other stakeholders within Outokumpu.
