The Center on Tobacco Control Research & Policy within the Department of Public Health Sciences and the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the University of Virginia Cancer Center seeks applicants for two new Research Specialist Intermediate positions.

The Research Specialists Intermediate will support several community-based research projects that target tobacco prevention and control cancer initiatives across a range of populations including youth, rural populations, military populations and pregnant women. This position is based at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA working closely with Dr. Melissa A. Little and other faculty members within the Center on Tobacco Control Research & Policy.

The successful applicants will have the opportunity to work on multiple projects including several National Institutes of Health (NIH) and foundation grants. Most projects are intervention-based, including individually based telephone counseling, classroom-based interventions and text-messaging interventions. Candidates will be given the opportunity to contribute to study implementation, data analyses and manuscript writing.

Responsibilities include:

  • Help develop protocols and IRB submissions.

  • Collect, screen, and verify data relating to human subjects research.

  • Deliver behavioral interventions.

  • Assist with data management and analysis

  • May help author material for publications. May participate in presentations with Principal Investigators (PIs) at meetings or conferences.

  • May supervise student workers.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, health sciences or a related field

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience. Master's degree will be considered in lieu of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, health sciences or a related field and at least 3 years of relevant work experience. A Master's degree may be considered in lieu of work experience.

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to follow instructions

  • Excellent communication skills, including with diverse audiences for recruitment and participant management efforts

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities

  • The ability to understand research processes and knowledge of general research procedures, including survey procedures

  • Proficiency with computer software, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

  • Experience with behavioral intervention research is preferred.

  • Proficiency in SAS and conducting simple statistical analyses is preferred.


Anticipated Hiring Range:

$48,000 - $66,000 commensurate with education and experience

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This is a restricted position, continuation will be subject to the continued availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check and health assessment per University policy.
